That surprises me too. Lowe would be very useful to the Yankees, even if he was only an average innings-eater in the AL East. Also the only teammates still on the Sox from Lowe's Red Sox days are Francona and Ortiz, unless they bring 'Tek back. (Well, Youkilis did have a minor bench role in '04...)

I could see slotting Lowe into the #4 spot in the rotation. He was very good for most of his Boston tenure up until the end, and he could provide some mentorship to Masterson in the use of the sinker. If you can get him for short years I say make the move.

Please go back to Boston. Please.

I do not want Derek Lowe at 15 million. No way, shape, or how.

he isnt coming here

I woiuldn't be so sure. I say he's an option. It doesn't help that his last year in the AL East was mediocre, but before that he'd done a great job here.

The deciding factor is probably Lowe's status as a Type A, which makes it unlikely they'd go after him, but still not impossible.

To me, everything about 2008 Derek Lowe screams contract year performance. Given the pitching market in recent years and Lowe's ability to stay healthy, $15 mil a year wouldn't shock me one bit and pitching in the AL East, I'd expect an ERA right around what Wakefield will give you

btw, I'm all for keeping Wakefield as the long reliever

Lowe has been consistant threw out his whole contract for the Dodgers. That said it was in the NL West, a very pitcher friendly division, and when leaving the AL East he was heading down, I will say thanks but no thanks.

Telling that Lowe's decline as a Boston pitcher coincided with the beginnings of Boston's problems attracting and keeping talented middle infielders. I know we'd been chewing through 2B's like candy for a couple years before that but 2004 was the year the whole middle of the diamond went blooie. For a sinkerballer, that matters.

Lowe's issues also coincided with the two years following being ramped up from 90 innings to 200+ for the first time, that's not really surprising either.

Of course, Lowe had some big off the field problems in Boston too but on the whole now that our MI is relatively stable again, and Lowe has had years to adjust to the workload, I think DL could be effective in Boston.

Please no Wake

When you show me the guaranteed 100% better option that we can get without crippling the team's future, I'll join with "please no Wake."

Please no Wake

If you can avoid him making post season starts, he is absolutely beneficial to have as the 5th starter. The major downfall I guess, is the fact that he has to have a personal catcher.

He doesn't necessarily need a personal catcher, he just can't use Varitek. If Varitek leaves, his replacement just might be able to catch it.

Signing Wake at his $4 million is a no-brainer. At the very least, he's backup insurance for an injury.

However, if you go into the season with him as your #5, that's the front office's fault.

Even more ridiculous than your usual, Gom.

Hell' date=' Kottaras has caught Zink, and he has been throw around in the 09 debate. We shouldn't pick a backup catcher based on his ability to catch Wakefield.[/quote']

That isnt saying much as Zink showed that he does not belong in the bigs......Wakefield is the best at his art. Zinks knuckler is no where near Wakes...although, he does have some experience.

That being said, no way Lowe comes back.....the FO did everything in their power to make him look bad. With the way he went out, I cannot believe he would ever want to return....however I think he knows that Boston would shell out a good amount for him, he would be on a winning team, and hes comfortable in the city since hes familiar with it, even if he has a fragile psyche.
