Interested in what he does in 09' date=' I think he'll be in the rotation. No use in trading him, his value couldn't be lower.[/quote']

I want a veteran signed to finish up the rotation -- a Brett Tomko type or such. Give Buchholz a chance to prove how he passes through the offseason in AAA and get him in rhythm for a few starts in Pawtucket before the injuries start.

Err yeah I'll pass on Tomko, he's brutal.

2 down.

Tomko sucks.

They should bring in a better option than that.

I didn't mean specifically Tomko. Just a below average guy Buchholz could claim a job from if he pitches well.

Bringing back Byrd is more what I have in mind actually.

FA Pitchers who could round out the rotation (or even be at the top): Burnett, Garland, Looper, Lowe, Oliver Perez, Sabathia, Sheets, Smoltz.

I don't really see anyone who could be a bottom of the rotation guy (not just on the above list but on the whole list). I bet the 5 is either Buchholz or a trade.

But why get a below average guy if you can get a solid guy--we have the funds.

LOL, I have Brett Tomko ranked as the #3,497th most likely pitcher we will see in a Red Sox uniform next season.

...Rich "El Guapo" Garces is #3,498.

So Garza's pretty much a max effort pitcher. Does he make it to 30 before going under the knife for something serious?

Because I'm still banking on Buchholz to be the guy by the end of the year and a below average guy is easier to get out of the way once Buchholz is ready -- like Tavarez and Lester.

I agree with you. Clay is the stuff of the future.

I either get a good #5 to be there the whole year and have Buchholz in case of injury, or start with Buchholz.

No, with already a good 1-2-3, you bring in a second-tier guy fill your rotation to get along in case the good rookie never shows up, and then the rookie is injury insurance with a chance that any time he comes up it's to stay as long as he handles the big leagues well. A la Masterson.

The last thing you want to do is have a big contract in the way when it's time to find out what you have.

I definitely don't bring in a big contract. A 1 year deal. Also I'm not talking stud here, so to an extent I agree that if someone gets hurt and you put Buch in the rotation and he's sick, you keep him there.

So Paul Byrd might just be perfect. Quality strikethrower, humble enough because of his lack of a fastball to maybe take a 1 year deal.

Offer him arb. See what happens.
