I think Masterson could be a very good pitcher in SD. His tendancy for GB is always a plus, throw in pitching in the pitcher friendly NL West parks, and he could look very good. But if he could bring in Peavy, I be tempted. He's signed at a reasonable amount, he might not be as dominate, but he's a K pitcher. And it's not like he has to be the ace either.

Masterson/Bowden/Kalish?

Beckett

Peavy

Lester

Dice-K

Buchholz/FA SP

I like that rotation a lot.

I used BaseballReference's nifty "Neutralize Stats" tool to see how good Peavy is, taking the park and league out of the equation.

Career stats: 79-57, 3.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 1244 K/416 BB

Still pretty good. He's like a 1A.

Getting Peavy would be nice' date=' but in the end I'll be surprised if he doesn't stay in the NL. He just seems like a career NL type player.[/quote']

I think Peavy thinks that as well, since the five teams that he's rumored to accept trades to are all NL teams (Braves, Cardinals, Astros, Dodgers, Cubs).

Our favorite columnist, Ken Rosenthal, wrote an article about possible Peavy suitors. He says Braves, Angels, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, Astros, Dodgers, Cardinals, Brewers, Rays, Rangers are all interested. He says that Yunel Escobar could go from the Braves, Hughes from the Yanks, Howie Kendrick from the Angels, Ellsbury/Lowrie/Masterson from the Sox.

Honestly, I doubt it. Masterson might be expendable, but I really doubt Lowrie is going anywhere unless we're prepared to go with Argenis Diaz right out of Spring Training.

I suppose they could go back to Lugo and Cora until Diaz/Navarro make it, but that's counting your chickens before they hatch, especially on Navarro.

Negotiate down to Bowden and Ellsbury.

You are seriously smoking crack.

Thats like me saying Kennedy and Melky. Ok...keep this in mind. You will get an A+ prospect or TWO for Peavy. He is below market value in salary, and one of the top 10 pitchers in the game. He is 27. Any team that gets him has him jump to the #1 position on the team, minus 2 or 3 teams.

If you think you're getting this guy, or any team thinks they are getting this guy, for anything but a kings ransom, you're insane.

Mets didnt give up a kings ransom for Santana.

The Twins were under more pressure to get rid of Santana, considering he would have been a free agent this winter had they held onto him, and he most definitely would have left for nothing. San Diego has Peavy sealed well into next decade. Slightly different circumstances.

I just read an article out of SD saying that Towers isnt even negotiating with AL teams as Peavy has not given him the green light to do so. Towers was even quoted as saying it is a futile effort right now until Peavy and his agent give the green light. And btw, Peavy made a comment to the same reporter that likely means Peavy wont see any of our teams. He apparently hates the northeast.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Peavy still in a Padres uniform next year.

Personally, I'm expecting him to be back with the Padres. But when a pitcher like him is (seemingly) put on the block, it draws interest.

Yea, I think I read somewhere that the furthest east he'll go is St. Louis

I would be surprised if he is a Padre in December.

Just throwing this out there, I heard it this morning.

Peter Gammons believes Peavy is a 5 inning pitcher in the AL, interesting. He said his style of pitching+ AL lineups- NL pitcher spot could really have a bad effect on hijm. And he thinks Peavy knows this and thats why he wants to stay in the NL, or will have to be compensated greatly to go to the AL.

Atlanta's GM came out today and said he won't trade any top prospects for Peavy

It would be pointless for the Braves to go get Peavy. Their team is free-falling toward the basement, and not even Peavy is going to change that.
