Nobody's depending on umps. The point is that the umps shouldn't make a difference.

This.

Giving that strike to Price was huge. He'd just walked his first batter and Kotsay was working the count against him, fouling off his pitches in the strikezone. Called differently, it goes to 2-2, and Price has to press a bit with runners on 1st and 2nd. We aren't guaranteed anything there, but when you take the same pitch location in the next half of the inning and award a leadoff runner to the home team in extras, it changes the context and strategy of the whole inning. I'll take both as a ball, or both as a strike, but not arbitrarily calling them different.

Oh, and if I hear Dewayne "McPoodle" Staats ever bitch about Tampa getting jobbed by the umps again, I'll hunt him down and poop on him.

I thought the umpiring was very inconsistent. I don't think it favored either team overall, but one pitch one time in one location would be a strike, and the next time a ball. It happens.

I don't think you can complain about a strike zone as much as a blown call [out/safe or fail/foul]. Both sides have to deal with the strike zone.

This is true and isn't a problem to me if it's consistent. The problem is these guys can't even be consistent, and it is since they can't that the thread / discussion was created.

You know what would be best? Keep the ump behind the plate. Let him go into his histrionics for called 3rd strikes. Let it seem like we still have the human element. But put an earpiece in his ear that emits a beep when the pitch is a strike. These guys continually prove that they can't be trusted with the edge of the strikezone.

I can't say I agree. It's part of the game. I want to watch baseball, not a video game.

I think that the tenure system for umpires is ridiculous. I don't understand why the best umpires aren't chosen more efficiently for the playoffs.

I thought they did player voting for umpires. I guess not.

It should be done by player and coach vote. You need 6 umpires per series, which comes out to 24 umpires. The top 6 will end up doing the WS. 7-12 will do the ALCS or NLCS. 13-24 will only work in the divisional series

Would you like to play a game?

Peter Gammons on Mike & Mike this morning:

"CB Bucknor... I don't even know what he's doing in the playoffs". He ripped Joe West too.

Good. As long as I've been watching baseball I've hated him. That double chinned jackass.

I don't want computers. What I'd like, though, would be a system where performances like Bucknor's last night resulted in some real repercussions - "benched" for a night, out of playoofs, sent to minors, for example.

And this is part is key: The fans need to know it happened. None of this behind closed doors ********.

So error and punishment, as opposed to no error? What does that do?
