Pedro's Last Hurrah? - 9/25, Cubs @ Mets

Recommended Posts

On the surface, tonight's Mets and Cubs game doesn't appear to ave much significance to Sox fans. But it does. This could be the last time the best pitcher of our generation takes the mound in any sort of meaningful role.

With their heartbreaking 9-6 loss to the Cubs last night, the Mets are now tied with the Brewers for the WC lead and trail the Phillies by 1.5 games. Tonight - their season may very well hang in the balance on the right arm of one Pedro Martinez.

It will be interesting to see if Pedro can turn back the clock and come up big when his team needs him, something us Sox fans got the pleasure to watch for years.

Go Pedro.

In my opinion, he is the best pitcher of the last 50 years, maybe even of all time. Good luck to you Pedro. I'd love to see you spin a gem.

Pedro was lifted in the 7th inning with 2 on and no one out. The score is tied at 3-3. He looked like he wanted to cry as he left the mound. He's got nothing left in his tank, but whatever he had left he left on the mound tonight. He struck out 9 and on the first pitch by Rincon, he gave up a 3 run homer. I think we might have seen Pedro pitch for the last time. He was a pleasure tro watch.

I agree, unfortunate that Rincon let his inherited runners to score. I think it is the last time we see Pedro...unfortunately he's got nothing left and I think he's too proud to accept a one year deal somewhere, in a limited role.

And as I type, the Mets win. Maybe we'll see a Pedro October start after all...

I hated Pedro with a passion, but only because he played for the wrong team. As a competitor, I loved the guy. Hat's off to the greatest pitchers I have ever seen in my lifetime. I salute you.

Enjoy your mango tree. You've earned an island of them.

Pedro lives out of the wilshire hotel

He looks out a window without glass

The walls are made of cardboard, newspapers on his feet

His father beats him cause hes too tired to beg

Hes got 9 brothers and sisters

Theyre brought up on their knees

Its hard to run when a coat hanger beats you on the thighs

Pedro dreams of being older and killing the old man

But thats a slim chance hes going to the boulevard

Kudos to Lou Reed

the closest thing to greatness ive ever seen was pedro martinez circa 97-99

I don't think we'll ever see a more dominant pitcher in our time. As Crunchy said, the Pedro of 97-99 was some of the greatest pitching in baseball history. I was 11 during his 99 performance and I can remember all the good games of that beautiful season. It was my favorite summer and October (despite the ALCS) watching Pedro perform.

Pedro was awful in Yankee stadium in the 04 playoffs

i nearly s*** myself when he was brought into game 7

1 ip 3 hits 2 earned when d lowe was cruising right along and 55,000 yanks awoke,i was squirming like a whore in church and even the 3rd out of that inning was a laser or it seemed it was anyways.

Remember his relief performance vs. Cleveland (in 1999?)...6 innings of no-hit ball, IIRC. That was one of the most amazing pitching performances I've ever seen.

1999, also the year Petey should have been MVP, but it seems a certain New York Post writer, George King, ensured the MVP would not go to Pedro.

From YSFS.org:

King's reason "was particularly atrocious, as his given reason – that pitchers shouldn’t win the MVP – was belied by his voting for David Wells and Rick Helling the year before. It was an unfortunate blemish on what to that point had been the best pitching season in Red Sox history."

Talk about a douchebag.

Rick Helling got an Mvp vote from george king, rick helling.

can you fathom the pettiness of george king?

next to gene collier of the pittsburg gazette, hes the only sports writer that renewed a 209a restraining order on the mean walrus 1 year after it expired.

george king,what a f***ing weasel.

I think pedro will be back but i think we all know that his good years are all behind him and you will see a mike mussina/randy johnson/maddox type of numbers. 12-12ish? 4.5 era ish?
