NEW YORK – The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Mark Kotsay from the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night pending a physical, according to a baseball source with knowledge of the deal. The Braves will receive a minor-league pitcher in return.

The Red Sox acquired Kotsay, who had cleared waivers, as outfield insurance. Earlier Tuesday they placed right-fielder J.D. Drew on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated disk in his back.

Kotsay, 32, is batting .289 with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 318 at-bats this season. The Red Sox will be his fifth team in his 12-year career.

Officials from both teams would not confirm that the deal was complete.

Not a bad pickup in my opinion.

Who thinks the "minor league pitcher" is Buchholz?

LOL I hope this is you being a comedian LOL

I guess with whats available its not a bad insurance policy. Maybe coming back to the AL, will help Kotsay's bat.

THat would be an obscene overpay. Buchholz might be struggling but he's still a very nice talent.

Sox in talks on Kotsay

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff August 26, 2008 11:39 PM

NEW YORK -- Though a couple of websites have reported that the Red Sox are nearing a deal with the Braves to bring Mark Kotsay to Boston, the Sox appear not quite that close. A source close to the situation said the team still is talking with Atlanta about the center fielder, though a deal has not been agreed upon.

Kotsay, who is signed through the end of this season, has a limited no-trade clause. It is not known if the Red Sox are one of the teams on that list.

While Kotsay would be insurance for J.D. Drew, who went on the disabled list today with a strained lower back, the center fielder also has had back trouble this season. He has suffered through a bulging disk, which put him on the disabled list earlier this season.

In what might be the biggest name traded before Sunday's deadline for setting postseason rosters, Braves center fielder Mark Kotsay is headed to Boston.

The Red Sox have acquired Kotsay for a mid-level prospect, according to major-league sources. The player headed to Atlanta hasn't been identified yet.

To complete the deal, Kotsay waived his no-trade clause for the Red Sox, one of eight teams on his no-trade list according to his contract.

Kotsay will receive a $325,000 assignment bonus for waiving his no-trade protection.

Eh. Numbers are okay. Definitely not Bucholz for one month of Kotsay, they aren't that off base.

Good pickup I guess. The Sox are obviously worried about someone's health.

why were the sox one of the eight teams he didn't want to go to?

Probably for the same reason Giles didn't want to come here...we were pretty set in the OF with Drew/Nixon, Ellsbury/Crisp/Damon, and Ramirez.

Scouting Report: Athletic and well-built, Sumoza signed for a big bonus out of Venezuela in mid-2004. Gifted athlete, still very raw. Shows the potential to be a five-tool player, but needs a lot of refinement. High power potential. Above average speed. Strikes out too much, still has some holes in his swing. Hits from a slightly open stance. Keeps his hands around his helmet. Swing tends to get a bit too long and he can jam himself. In the field, Sumoza has above average range, a decent glove, and a good arm. Overall, he has a ton of potential, but still a long way to go.

this is a good move for both sides. The Braves werent gonna resign him and likely wouldnt be offering him arb. So they get a project with some tools. better than nothing, while also getting out of the last few mil of his contract. The sox OTOH, can afford to play him while JD is out and then offer him arb, with him knowing he wont have a spot. That way, the sox could get a supp pick for him, as I believe he's a type B. To be honest with you, I wouldnt be surprised if Kotsay is in pinstripes next yr.

can anyone really determine whether this deal is good for both sides or not already? you know what you're getting with Kotsay but how the hell do you know what you're gonna get from a 19-year old kid playing in low-A ball?

the deal is what it is. wait 6-7 years to see how this kid pans out before judging the deal

Kotsay won't be in lineup

NEW YORK -- Though Mark Kotsay is expected in New York today before the game, he is not expected to be in tonight's lineup against the Yankees. His plane is scheduled to land just past 5 p.m., which would get him to the ballpark around 6 p.m.

It's unlikely that we'll get to talk to him before the game, but we'll bring you up to date as soon as we can on Kotsay, and how he'll be used by the Sox.

Because for the Red Sox's needs right now Kotsay fits.

This team is making another serious run at a WS title and Sumoza was maybe the 8th best OF prospect in the system or so.

Kotsay is what the Sox need right now until Drew gets back healthy.

oh, I agree 100%. I'm just talking about judging from the standpoint of trying to figure out what Sumoza will become. I don't even consider players to be a prospect until they hit Double A ball. To me, the rest are just young baseball players under contract to the Red Sox.

Hell, even guys like Jeff Bailey and Chris Carter are better "prospects" than Sumoza.

Yes he's talented but it's a lotto ticket. Really is a win-win for both sides.
