Millwood is signed through 2010 at 11 mil a yr. And, over the past 2 yrs, his WHIP is 1.65, which is abysmal. The sox likely could have him for free if they eat his contract.

Padilla is signed through 2009 at 11 mil a yr with a team option. He's been a bit better (1.48WHIP this season) but has struggled to stay on the field. After throwing 200+IP in his first two full seasons, he has done it only once more in 5 tries. He was the talk of the trading deadline until teams realized he just isnt worth much in return. I am sure the sox will be forced to deal something of value, but I dont see this happening this yr anyway

You must mean, "The Yankees could have him for free if they eat his contract." For Boston, the price would, of course, be higher. ;)

I am surprised that Jackson has not chimed in to tell us that Beckett's symptoms are signs of advanced Lupus or something and that he'll be dead in a month.

It's never lupus.

On the topic of Beckett, I'd be more than concerned about it if I were a Sox fan. I've already watched the Yankees lose their best starting pitcher twice this year, and it is tough to rebound from.

Beckett has been scratched from tomorrow and will go see James Andrews. bad sign....
After hearing Terry, it sounds like they are doing this more for Beckett's peace of mind.

Thats good news to hear I guess. At least, if he does make it back for the stretch run, he will be fresh.

It seems that the Red Sox have cleared him to pitch, but that Josh has caught a touch of Drew's vaginosis.

By Beckett

I think scary is probably a good word for it," Beckett said earlier this week. "I've had some sleepless nights thinking about all kinds of stuff. You generally think the worst.

We're trying to figure out what's causing it and go from there," Beckett said earlier this week. "Right now it's just day to day and I'm dealing with it. We have a great medical staff. We're trying to be cautious. We're not talking about just the end of a season, but about the end of a career. Some organizations would do anything they could to get a player back out there. I appreciate what they are doing for me here.

You know and I know that Beckett wants to be on the mound. Dismissing his concerns as "vaginosis" is very unworthy because it ignores the very real possibility that if Beckett steps on the mound with an elbow injury and blows out his arm, he might just be done for good. I think ruling that out is a very smart move even if it weakens our playoff position.

At some poind I'd rather make sure we can contend in the nest 3 or 4 years than try to ride a pitcher into the ground trying to Win Al All Costs. That's part of what being a perennial contender means. It means that you plan beyond this season to how you're going to contend for at least the next two.

Today's players and especially pitchers are pampered beyond belief. The ones who don't have vaginosis are the exception. Beckett sounds like a wuss in his recent quotes.

a700 is basically trolling with respect to Drew at this point.

You play baseball with a herniated disk for five months. Give me a f***ing break.

Pauley makes the most sense for Saturday since he's already with the big club.

I'd expect Bowden to come up when rosters expand next week.

A troll with 11,000+ posts?

I am just sick of these pampered wusses. I'm entitled to express that opinion whether or not you agree. Yaz told the doctors to take him out of traction because the Yankees were in town. Drew and Beckett need to be free from any and all discomfort. Beckett is sleeping with his arm in a contraption. It is an insult to women to say that these players have vaginosis. My apologies to women. If these players got periods like women, they would go on the DL every month.

its the guy's f***ing career we're talking about. his money-maker is his arm, if he's concerned about it, it's his right to get the opinion of the best doctor around on it

He said himself that he has no pain. The game is ass backward today. I remember when stars wouldn't dare sit, because even they feared that they might lose their jobs. They would confide in the trainers and ask them not to disclose injuries to the manager. Now, it's a big deal if a guy throws 200 innings. He's revered as a horse. Today's players are prima donnas. That used to be the exception and not the rule. Personally, I would like a staff full of pitchers in their walk years like CC Sabathia. I'd throw them till their arms fell off and I'd let some other team pay big bucks for the broken down shell.

Bert Blyleven was just on a rant about the pampering of pitchers. He disagrees with shutting pitchers down in the minors after hitting 150-160 innings. He thinks they are failing to condition their arms to pitch 200 innings in the majors. Blyleven noted that when he was 20 he threw almost 300 iinnings and he pitched for 22 years. Nolan Ryan is on record that he will condition all of his pitchers in the organization to pitch one more inning. He wants them conditioned to throw 120 pitches per outing.

His contract is guaranteed so he gets paid whether or not he blows out his arm. I don't like that he is already concerned about his next contract. He has no concern about earning his current guaranteed money. Pardon me if I don't cry if he breaks down and only makes $60 million in his career instead of $160 million. He's being paid to pitch and he has no pain or injury that is preventing him from performing. Tingling in his arm. Sleeping contraptions. Sickening.

Bowden > Pauley.

Why are we giving starts to inferior pitchers at this crucial juncture of the season?

Why are we giving starts to inferior pitchers at this crucial juncture of the season?

Especially against a team fighting for the Wild card berth.
