Awesome. Byrd is 4-0 in his last four starts.

Jul 21	@LAA	W 5-2	5.1	9	1	1	0	2	5	5	8	94	27	49	W(4-10)	- 5.28

In his last 29 innings, he's given up 25 hits and 4 runs. He's on the up right now. Solid pick up.

He's not pitching tonight on 3 days rest so I'm guessing they let Zink go tonight and if he does good then they'll stick Byrd in Clay's spot and if he doesn't do well then they'll just have Byrd cover Wake next start and then move the worst of Clay, Wake and Byrd to the pen/minors.

Sox get Byrd

Both the Red Sox and Guardians have issued press releases announcing the deal ... here's an Associated Press story on the trade ...

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox have acquired pitcher Paul Byrd in a trade with Cleveland.

The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Guardians.

The 37-year-old Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this season. But the right-hander has won all four of his starts since the All-Star break.

Boston leads the AL wild-card race. The Red Sox are minus starter Tim Wakefield -- the knuckleballer is out with a stiff right shoulder.

I wonder how the fans will treat him, based upon his HGH use. He says he used it only with a prescription, but I feel most Boston fans are very anti-roiding of any kind.

come to think of it, the fact that the Yankees didnt claim him ahead of the Sox is a big indicator to me that they may have waived the white flag for the season

If they haven't, allow me...

I like it. He's Mussina-lite. The stuff is about the same right now, with Byrd's problem being bouts of inconsistency. He hasn't had a decent receiver in Cleveland. It will be interesting see how well he pitches with Tek handling him.

Like this move a lot. He can step in and give us some much needed stability at the #5 spot in the rotation with Colon still rehabbing and Wakefield on the DL. And plus, we get him for a PTBNL or cash.

You guys think not picking up Byrd is a sign Yanks are waiving the flag? Are you kidding me we are talking about Paul Byrd for crying out loud. "He is 4-0 in his last 4 starts". Whoop-di-do. After he gets slapped around friday you'll be ready to send him back to Cleveland.

Dont get me wrong picking him up for nothing isnt a bad move, but it really isnt going to change the course of the season. Its not like now that you have Byrd the Sucks will win 90% of their games.

Lets go back to reality Byrd has a career ERA of 5 against the LA Angels, 5.14 against Tampa, 4.95 against the Yanks, 4.46 against the White SOx. Not really stellar numbers against any of the contending playoffs teams. Actually the only team he has decent numbers against is Minn with a 3.92 career era.
