I think the point is that the Yankees could a) use someone capable of league average pitching at the back of their rotation, and B) allowed a team ahead of them to improve.

I don't think anyone here is thinking Byrd is any great shakes. He's a league average pitcher over his career, just like Wakefield is, who just went down, and something Buchholz is not capable of right now. Make no mistake, this improves the Sox right now, and the Yankees did nothing to stop it from happening. It would have improved the Yankees too. While I don't agree with the sentiment about waving the white flag, I think those two facts are its genesis.

Oh, and the "Sucks"? Couldn't you use the "x"? That way you'd at least show the wit of a pre-adolescent 3rd grader.

You guys think not picking up Byrd is a sign Yanks are waiving the flag? Are you kidding me we are talking about Paul Byrd for crying out loud. "He is 4-0 in his last 4 starts". Whoop-di-do. After he gets slapped around friday you'll be ready to send him back to Cleveland.

yea, cause you guys are really better off with Dan Geise and Ian Kennedy

you signed f***ing Eric Milton, why the hell else wouldnt they jump on Byrd when all theyd have to give up is the change between the cushions of Hank Steinbrenner's couch?!

Who are the Sox going to option down to make room for Byrd? I'm guessing Clay.

I agree with you ORS. Either Cashman is certain that Hughes, Pavana and Joba can come back, or he is just throwing in the towel. If he is doing so, would he mind telling the players? The Stros occupy the 15th worst MLB position at 1 game over .500. Lets get below that so we dont lose our draft pick when we sign CC and/or Tex

if Cashman passed on Byrd when he would have had to give up NOTHING because he's relying on Pavano for the stretch run, he should be out of a job this morning

Red Sox optioned RHP Charlie Zink to Triple-A Pawtucket.

That was quick. Zink stepped into the rotation for an injured Tim Wakefield, but got rocked in his MLB debut Tuesday night after being handed a 10-run lead in the first inning. He could be back in September, but 28-year-old knuckleballers tend not to get a ton of chances. His demotion signals that Clay Buchholz will likely remain in the rotation following the trade for Paul Byrd.

Sweet deal, nice addition to the rotation and it didnt cost any players

The Boston Herald reports that "there will be no 'player to be named' in the trade that brought Paul Byrd to Boston."

According to the newspaper, the Guardians agreed to trade Byrd without getting a player in return because the Red Sox were the only team willing to absorb the entire $2 million remaining on his contract. The impending free agent is scheduled to make his Red Sox debut Friday.
