Let's get post-Manny era off to a good start. It's August 1st, there are 53 games left to play, we are 3 back of the Rays and 1.5 up on the Yanks. We're also 1st in the Wild Card standings, .5 game ahead of Minnesota, but that's not the focus yet.

Oakland is a half game below .500, and I really hope we take it to them this series. They should continue to have trouble scoring runs, although they are getting their best hitter back in Frank Thomas tonight, but we're facing their best pitcher, Justin Duchscherer.

Tim Wakefield birthday mojo tonight? He turns 42 tomorrow. Hopefully he'll put his last game against Oakland, where he gave up 8 hits and 8 ER in 5 IP, while walking and K-ing 4. It happened to be his worst start of the season. This Oakland team has a combined .892 OPS against Wake. Whoops. Here's to hoping that he also puts last Saturday's start behind him, when we lost 10-3 to the Yanks.

And, of course, Jason Bay arrives tonight.

it seems like weeks have past since the loss to the Angels on Wednesday. I expect to see a re-focused team tonight with a lively crowd, should be fun.

Cool! Are you going to see his first game, too?

I don't get it. Please explain.

Most individuals would interpret your post as meaning that you would be at the game tonight.

I pretended not to understand that, and I posted a comment that suggested that I envisioned you as one of a group of 38,000 welcoming Jason Bay to Boston someplace--Fenway, Logan, USS CONSTITUTION, Bunker Hill Monument, The Common, The Esplanade, Old North Church, Government Center, or the reflecting pool at the Christian Science Center--and that, after that welcome, you might go to the ballgame.

Cheez...back to stats...;)

Go Jason...I'll be watching this game at a Yankee-friendly bar so it should be interesting.

Chris Smith recalled

The Red Sox have recalled RHP Chris Smith from Pawtucket to (at least temporarily) fill the vacant spot in the 'pen resulting from RHP Craig Hansen being dealt to the Pirates yesterday. Smith, 27, who last pitched for the Sox June 30, is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA, allowing two earned runs on three hits over 6.1 innings in three appearances with the big club. He is 1-3 with a 2.24 ERA with 13 saves over 52.1 IP with Pawtucket, striking out 47 while walking only 8, and has held opposing batters to a .227 batting average.

I was expecting Smith to be the top candidate to be called up, should be trusty coming out of the pen

I think Remy was right, you can see the reception effected him. All Douchebaggerer needed to do there was get it over, but he couldn't even do that.
