HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, to all the dads out there.

So, we got a little into the Pacific Campaign yesterday? Those of you unfamiliar with it should know that JHB is right, Tarawa was a blood bath. The battle plan was a little flawed. It was based on "neap" tide, which provided 5 feet of water depth over the reef that formed the lagoon through which they were attacking. However, "neap" tide only occurred twice a month with proper sun, moon, Earth alignment. The Higgins Boats drafted about 4 feet of water. When they launched the attack at high tide, the coral reef was covered by only 3 feet of water. The tracked ampib assault vehicles (AMTRAKS) made it over the reef. The Higgins Boats ran aground about 500 yds off shore.

Did you know that the Assault of Saipan was launched today in 1944? What is the Battle of Saipan famous for? When it became apparent that the US offensive to take the island would be successful, the Japanese civilians on the island behaved in lemming like fashion and jumped to their deaths from Banzai Cliff.

Josh should be able to make the Reds behave similarly.

Win it for: DAD

You know what else today is? St. Vitus Day - patron saint of actors and epileptics

I thought that to be an odd but apt combination.

I notice that "pleasant but boring" mojo has transformed into "Marine Corps amphibious assault" mojo during, roughly, the nearly rained-out game Friday night.

Which is cool...

Happy Fathers Day! My kids seem to have forgetten...Mrs. JHB pointed to a picture of a gas grill this morning and encouraged me to buy it, given that our old grill needs replacing.

I'll have to try getting her a picture of a dishwasher, clothes dryer or some other appliance that's wearing out for Mother's Day...nah, that would just make things painful.

But, hey, maybe Josh Beckett can make this a happy day for every Dad in Red Sox Nation!

Funny that you mention that. My wife gave me, from the kids, cedar planks for grilling fish. I said, "So is it OK if I give you the new vaccum you want for your birthday now?" Crickets.

Lineups and notes

CINCINNATI - Happy Father's Day.

Manny Ramirez will get one more day of rest of nursing his right hammy. You'll note that both Julio Lugo (stomach flu) and Jason Varitek (strep throat) are back in the lineup but Terry Francona pointed out that he reserves the right to change the lineup if either don't feel well enough to go.

Beckett is a moderate* fly ball pitcher--good call on giving Manny another day and keeping Ellsbury in LF. Manny can be used as a pinch-hitter at an opportune moment if need be.

* Edit: I hadn't realized until I just did a quick fact check that there are only five AL qualifying starting pitchers with GB% lower than Beckett's this year. In 2008, he's a fly ball pitcher, with no "moderate" qualifier needed.

The Patron saint of Epilepsy will guide Josh Beckett's hand. Gametime 1:15, so after this win we'll be able to watch the Celtics clinch.

Hansen.

TheKilo is seated in Great American behind JD Drew, but he came down to whisper in Tito's ear. Sure hope that he was right.

Dude, my tip totally worked.

Youk probabaly should have used his body to block the ball because he had a ton of time.

On the NESN angles, I had no idea why Youk let the ball go past him. :dunno:
