With Schilling being all you could ask for in the postseason while his stuff continues to leave much to be desired, do you re-up schilling for 08? 09 if he wants 2 yrs?

Holley was talking about it today on EEI and said that if he pitched a gem (like he did), then he should be re-upped. Do you agree? It is an interesting dilemma borne out of a player who steps up when the bell rings on the postseason like clockwork. But does he have enough to play another full season? Is this the last gasp of a stellar and clutch career? Discuss...

If Schilling really only wants a one year deal with Boston like he said he did I have no qualms bringing him back.

Two years is pushing it.

Passing time while counting the rubber bands in the psych ward MJ? Well he's no Wang spectacular, but I think he'll do. He's gone. Philly makes the most sense. Don't want him gone. But, again, you're talking about the offseason while we're going to win the World f***ing Series. The Red Sox that is...winning the World Series. I'm keeping the eyes on the prize. Game after game humbly. For the time being.

We'll revisit when we're drinking Ryan Garko's unused champagne.

The world series is a foregone conclusion. Enjoy it. This is quite possibly the biggest mismatch since the Yankees played the Padres in 98.

I think 1 year is a no-brainer...especially if he's still in the $13mil range. If he now wants 2 years, i doubt it gets done.

I'm on the fence. I really want him back for '08, but I don't know about 2yrs.

I know there would be much interest in Schilling around MLB, but I'm curious... Who do you think Schilling is interested in playing for? He has said he would never got to the Yankers, (although nothing is ever a guarantee). So, if he leaves the Sox and doesn't go to the MFY, then who does he want to pitch for?

Curt will easily get a 2 year deal in the NL( if not 3). He is the best pitcher within this year's free agents - I will be shocked if he is in Boston next year.

Philly would probably be the #1 choice.

I'll weight in now. I think the sox did the prudent thing. Yeah, I'm a yankee fan, whatever. But Schilling showed serious signs of breakdown this yr and his arsenal now hardly reaches 90mph. Sure, he is adapting to it now mostly because he has always been around the plate and he is smarter than most any other pitcher in the game. But at some point, the stuff slips and no matter where you put it, the balls get crushed. This happened with Mussina and it will eventually happen with Schilling. He gave you everything he possibly could this season and it was enough to win a world series. But do you think he has enough to get through another season of AL East baseball? Where he'd have to face the yankees at least 3-4 times, where they just dismemeber him? Can his shoulder last?

I think the answer is in his stuff and the example is right down I-90 to I-84 into NYC. We held onto Moose because he showed poise in the face of declining stuff. But the stuff declined further over the offseason and he came back useless for multiple yrs at a high price tag. The sox face the same dilemma here. If Schillings 88mph FB right now becomes an 85mph FB in April, is he worth having around? I dont think so. So let him walk, offer him arbitration with the agreement that he doesnt accept it and watch him decline slower in the NL. Take the picks and thank him for all he gave to you.

I want him to retire in a Red Sox uniform.

do you think that is kinda up to him though? Some players want to have the uniform torn off them after having a few poor seasons at the end. The art of being the GM is trying to determine when that decline is coming and avoid it. And with Curt, yeah, he is the balls right now, but you have the evidence before you. What is worse, having him finish his career in Philly or having his career end in Boston after posting a 6+ ERA.

He can always come back, announce line-up, throw the first pitch and hang out like Millar.

I do too...and since he said he only plans on playing one more year let's get it done.

if it is a 1 yr deal, then things may change. If he comes back and plays like s***, then there isnt as much consequence of asking him politely to hang it up. But I have a feeling Curt can parlay this into a 2-3 yr deal.

If we win the World Series there's always the chance he would choose to retire after this season. He would retire before he would put up a 6+ ERA, anywhere. He's the first to acknowledge his short-comings and wouldn't subject any team to a half ass Curt Schilling.

What a way to go out with a bang though. http://smiliesftw.com/x/bowcool_1.gif

Maybe he will just retire after this season. I mean I know he has said that he wants to pitch a few more years but maybe he will just decide that this is the way he wants to end his career, on top.

Schilling at 1 yr ok, but its got to be 13M at the most, it should be for less. Schilling is a 3rd SP at best and more like a #4, 13M for a #4 SP is a little much.

But you're paying so little for Buchholz and Lester, it seems like you can spend a little more to keep Schilling.

I've completely reversed my thoughts on this matter. If it is a one year deal, it should be a no brainer to bring him back. Dude is "old and breaking down" and still sported a sub-4.00 ERA.

I think any conversation about re-signing Shill, begins with Lester and Buchholz. If those two are penciled in the rotation for next year along with Beckett and Dice-K, it seems it's either Wake or Shill.

Disagree. With the age and injury risk each pitcher has it could very well be both. Wake's on the books for $4 million next year. Not exactly breaking the bank.

One year deal would work... but the NL might be enticing to him, weaker lineups, competition a bit slower (depending on exactly where he ended up). I agree with the Philly prediction as a possibility, but of course, we'd like him to stay in Boston one more year and then retire. That seems to be the best bet.

Well, the big guy posted over at SoSH and he's only looking for one more year. You bring him back if it's just for one more year. With a first draft rotation of ....

Beckett

Dice

Buchholz

Lester

________

... then it would be nice to have good options to fill in the blank. If Wake comes back, I think he's at the point where you can't count on him eating innings due to nagging injuries (his back seems a regular culprit). Fill that blank with Wake and Schill. Both will need some time off or a little extra rest in between starts (plus you could sqeeze them both in when they are in the middle of long stretches of consecutive games to give the kids and Dice some extra rest).

No brainer, if you ask me.

Yep.
