Says the article:

"Farrell has a reputation as a shrewd talent evaluator, a characteristic that would look good on his resume relative to the Pirates."

Great, he could further cement Pittsburgh's status as an organization that locates and develops talent that they'll never be able to afford to re-sign several years into the players contracts.

Good luck, Johnny, maybe you can get them to a .500 record for the first time since 1992 (although I doubt it). Then again, that could be good enough for 2nd place in the worst division in baseball.

I's like him to stay but won't hate on the man if he goes. Dice-K and Farrel have ( from what i've heard) a very strong relationship, hope it doesn't effect his performance alot.

i dont see how his performance can get alot worse, maybe better, but not worse

So we don't give DiceK any adjustment period at all?

Jesus Christ.

Farrell Likely to stay with WS winner

Farrell, the Boston pitching coach who probably is -- or was -- high on Pirates general manager Neal Huntington's interview list, is said to be strongly leaning toward remaining with the Red Sox.

Farrell, who succeeded Huntington as Cleveland's minor-league director six years ago, joined the Red Sox just last winter, and it's believed he would prefer to stay in Boston rather than leave after one season. The Red Sox, who paid Farrell an estimated $350,000 in 2007, want him to stay and might sweeten his salary as an incentive.

I would be sorry to see him go. Especially to the Pirates. That franchise couldn't find its ass with a map and a crack detector. Tough, tough place to go for your first managerial post. IF anyone can turn them around, it could be Farrell.

Farrell turns down shot at Pirates' job

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

Sox pitching coach John Farrell released a statement through the Sox, saying he planned to stay with the club rather than pursue a chance to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates. His statement said:

“While I do have aspirations to manage in the major leagues in the future, my commitment to John, Tom, Larry, Theo, Tito, and the Red Sox, needs to be greater than one year for their faith in hiring me as their pitching coach. Therefore I have declined the opportunity to interview for the position of Pittsburgh Pirates manager. I look forward to contributing to and competing for another World Series title here in Boston."

It sounds really nice the way he phrased his intentions, but it's also subject to interpretation. Possible interpretations?

He IS loyal and truly feels he should stay longer given the opportunity granted him by the Sox.

He is not quite ready to manage a team and would like a little more seasoning.

Pittsburgh...the city, the team and the organization...f***ing sucks and there's no way in hell he's going to go there...and he'll wait for better options.

I'm just happy he's sticking around.

I'd say a combo of b and c above everything else.

He can enjoy Boston another season, then see what his option are come next offseason. There will have to be someting better then the Pirates job available.

Yeah, the Dodgers may have an opening by then.

Agreed, why jump into that potentially s***** situation. Heck, maybe he could land in the Bronx after Girardi pisses off the Yanks brass and gets himself s***-canned.

I think c has to be in the equation. Although' date=' Pittsburgh does have a nice stable of young arms, but the philosophy of that place is so bassackwards that he end up fired after yr 2.[/quote']

More than that I think is the fact that, IMO, they'll never be able (or willing?) to pay what it takes to KEEP those young arms and fill in the holes necessary to really contend.

Pittsburgh would be a stupid job to take right now. Farrell will have a sick rotation and bullpen to coach for the next few years in Boston which will only make his stock rise that much more and open up better opportunities for him
