Wow. You knew it was coming, but it still doesnt sink in right away. But George will make it official this week in their annual "season in review" meetings. He will hand over control of the yankees to his sons. Their roles have not been identified to this point, but they will be soon. George will still be there in a "chairman" position, but that is more of a figurehead than anything else. Thanks for the memories George.

Leave it to the Boss stealing headlines. I am surprised that he did n't wait until the World Series to make this announcement. He probably didn't want to wait until the WS, because he wasn't sure that the Red Sox would make it and he wanted to steal some of their thunder.

Kinda what I was thinking. George really is a class act. The most selfish owner in baseball history finally getting the hell out. Treated few people with respect, threatened more than praised, and never learned to keep his mouth shut.....Joe Torre out-lasts George Steinbrenner and will probably keep his job because of all the other influences surrounding the situation.

Your time has come and gone George....goodbye

there is a good chance that the torch has already been passed and this is simply the formality. I dont even know if George knows who he is anymore.

He still knows how to steal a headline. Witness the threat to Torre's job in the ALDS.

Jesus Christ 700' date=' give it a rest would you.[/quote']Give what a rest? I had a cousin that was a chaffeur for the Boss. My cousin was a tough NYC cop that was stationed in the Bronx. He went to work for the Boss after he retired from the NYPD. I am well familiar with the Boss and his antics from an insiders perspective. The Boss could give a s*** if he gets any sympathy. The Boss was, and I am sure still is, a tough prick, with a bad temper and a mean streak. Of course, he did have his charitable side. No one is all bad.

He's the greatest owner in the history of New York sports. I give him a lot of credit for turning the Yankees around, and I doubt that there's an owner who wants to win more than this guy.

Didn't MLB ban him for life?

ESPN said they are both going to run the team and have a say in all matters but for the most part Hank will handle baseball operations and Hal is concentration on the new stadium.

Bye Bye Georgy, this is better then when Marge whats her name( she owned the Reds at one time) left MLB hahaha, I didn't like the old bastard but it will be kind of weird not having him around.

St. Bernard and I believe half of old Marge's problem was she was drinking heavily from the flask around the dogs neck.

She must have been rolling over in her grave this weekend when they announced that Dusty Baker was the new manager.

Yeah, my bad, I always got confused and thought she was the St. Bernard.

He does have a very charitable side and tries to do a lot of things for a lot of people. Always gave people second chances, whether it be players or people he knew personally. If anyone was struggling he would either sign them hoping to get the best out of them, or would provide people with little positions within the organization to get them back on their feet. While yes, he has definately had his outbursts and absolutely been a hard-ass prick in the past, made mistakes and paid for them; it's not right to turn a blind eye to all the good he did. He'll still maintain a role in the organization, and while not having him at the helm of things the past 2 seasons has been unusually pleasant, it's going to be very awkward having him in an even more minimized role from this point on.

While a lot of his thoughts and decisions were misuided, he always had the best intentions in mind. A selfless man willing to do what it took for his players, fans, and staff.

Selfless? Dave Winfield disagrees. He help usher in big-money free-agency with all of his selflessness. Do you think it was because he gave two shits about player rights?

Good riddance.

No. He gave a s*** about winning. That was it. Was he a perfect owner? No. Did he make mistakes? Yes.

What he did do was care about his team, and did the best he could to put a winner on the field for New York. Realize, the real dark days when were CBS owned the team. The Yankees had the best winning percentage of any team in the 1980s. They also won 4 Championships in 5 years under his helm once, and twice in the 1970's.

He put his money, his mouth, his persona on the line. He delivered. Not every time, but as best as he could. Find me a New York fan of another team that doesn't want a Steinbrenner running his team.

The real crappy owners? Guys like Pohlard, who can buy Steinbrenner many times over but pockets the money. Owners whose teams pocket the revenue sharing money and don't throw it into player development or free agents. Like the Pirates. Or the Royals. Or the Devil Rays. Or the A's. The list goes on and on.

I'm glad Steinbrenner owns the Yankees, and I hope his helm lasts for much, much longer. The man is definitely a cult of personality. He has given his team, his fans, much to cheer about. He is brash, rude, obnoxious, full of bluster and bile, but generally with a heart of gold, rushing to aid to those in need. He believes in winning...at all costs.

Sounds like a New Yorker to me.

Outside of this country, to the rest of the world, it would sound like America personified.

Yeah, theres nothing wrong with rooting for a team that plays in the city you live. They compete with the Yankees 6 times a year, so with the exception of those 6 times I hav no problem rooting for the Mets. Lots of people have allegiances with more than one team, if I were to guess I would say that the Red SOx werent the only team you pull for.

Now how many more times are you going to point out that I root for the mets too? Seems like every other post of yours that I read there is some mention of it.

...also, how is this relevant to the post of mine that you quoted? Just another Boston bum who has nothing better to do than try to pull strings and instigate conflict.

He does have a very charitable side and tries to do a lot of things for a lot of people. Always gave people second chances' date=' whether it be players or people he knew personally.[/quote']He did finally swallow his pride and sort of apologize to Yogi Berra (the most decorated Yankee World Champion-- 10 Rings) after holding a grudge against him for about 15 years keeping the proud Berra away from the stadium all those years. Where's the apology for Zim. He said that he would not say hello to the Boss if the Boss walked into his house. The Boss was pretty mean and nasty at the end. He hurt him more than Petey did when he spiked him.
