Negotiating tactic. Who knows for sure?

The money would be deferred, minority ownership, etc....all ********. Can't see the Cubs doing it with Zambrano and Soriano all tied up. I still think he ends up staying if the Yankees win the World Series, leaving if they get kicked out of the first round, and flip a coin on the other possibilities. Then again, your guess is as good as mine.

A-Rod will definitely opt out and Cashman said the Yankees will not try and sign him if that is the case. Let's see if Cashman is full of crap on this.

A-Rod should leave NY. He should say F-You to all the fair-weather Yankee fans who booed him while he was 'only' hitting 30 HR and 100+ RBI. They applaud every time he comes to the plate now. He's easily the best thing that team has going for it and if he had any integrity he would leave and remind NY about what they had with an enormous black-hole in the middle of their vaunted lineup.

My money is on him resigning a huge contract with the Yankees and staying there for the foreseeable future.

I don't think Arod will opt out *IF* he signs with the Yankees. I can easily see the Yankees giving him 5 more years at 150 million on top of his current contract. With Giambi coming off, Mussina coming off, Pettite coming off, Pavano coming off, and the influx of young talent in Hughes, Kennedy, Chamberlain, Cano, and Wang, the Yankees can afford to sign Arod to what he wants.

Basically, if Cashman gives him 5 years at 150 million, and he's got 81 million coming to him over the next 3, what team is going to give any player 8 years at 231 million? It's a high stakes game of poker, and Cashman/Steinbrenner have held their own with Boras. If Arod wants to stay, he will. The money will be there. However, by the Yankees saying they won't be involved if he opts out is not only likely real, but devastating to Boras. With the biggest spenders off the market, Arod won't get as much from the other teams. It really is the best match for both parties. I expect it to come down to the last day, 11 hours into the opt out window. We'll see....

He wants a salary that covers him until then. He has three more years on what he has now. He wants to sign a contract that takes him through his declining years.

Sounds like Boras's is up to being Boras as usual. If the Cubs get sold in time and the owner will fork up the Cash( Cuban ) I say CHC has one of the best chances of signing him. And with Soriano, Ramirez, Lee, and Arod in the starting lineup that offense would be potent!

its against the rules for a current player to negotiate for club ownership present or future.

Never heard of this before. Got a link?

What's interesting is the loophole being utilized here. It's tampering if a front office negotiates with a player before they become a FA. However, the group negotiating doesn't own the team yet, so Levine's complaint won't hold water, and I'm disinclined to think MLB does anything to stop this. What is essentially happening is the prospective owner is trying to assess how competitive they can be, vital information to a potential owner. I don't think the MLB will do anything to dissuade them from performing this type of pre-purchase investigation. Clubs getting sold is good for MLB because it sets new equity levels.
