Gagne and Farnsworth....who would you take?

Gagne is not an 8th inning pitcher. Never was nor will he be. He loves to challenge hitters but without a 95+ fastball he's smoke and mirrors. After LoDuca was tradedt. he was never on the same page with any of the worthless catchers (Ross,Mayne,Bako,Navarro). He did do rather well with Martin for a short time. In fact. He flew Martin to his home in the off season and worked out with him. Paulie knew what to call and when to call it, Russell did as well.

The few games I have seen Gagne pitch in Tex. he struggled and looked rather shaky. Might not be a bad idea for him and the catchers to get together. Let him show them what he has.

Gagne should had pitched in the first game where there was a 4 run lead and Had Papelbon in case that he couldn't hold it and if not Papelbon for the second game, but that's Francona for you.

I'm all in on the Gagman bashing, but Fancona. Not for that move. First lets get the facts strait. Pap came in at the top of the eight with score 7-4. Before you go calling that a soft save recall there were two on, and you want Gagman there.

The problem with saving Pap for the second game is your using the benefit of hindsite. At the time, Francona has no way of knowing if there will even be a save opportunity. I'm sure like all of us he was hoping for a blowout and no need for Gagne. You got play to win the first game in the eight with the tying run at the plate. Had Francona put Gagne in there I'm sure you would be asking why wasn't it Pap in the first game.

Apparently he is no longer nineth inning pitcher either.

The best part about this thread is going back and reading how many people would take Gagne. As terrible as Farnsworth has been, at least Torre doesn't use him when the game is on the line.

You can't be serious. Gagne was supposed to be used for when the game was on the line...

Yeah, but at this point, he's proven he can't do it. I hope Francona keeps throwing him out there in important game situations. At least Torre knows not to trust Farnsworthless with anything less than a 3 run lead.

He was supposed to be your bridge. Not demolish it.

Yeah, but I don't blame Francona for using him in that role. You'd figure after awhile he'd figure himself out (and the last two nights look promising...his off-speed stuff seems to be there). I see what you mean, but the blame doesn't lie with Tito. It lies with Gagne himself.

Game 7 ALCS...tie game...16th inning....Farnsworth and Gagne, last two pitchers left.

Would be an exciting inning, I will admit.

that's like having a choice between catching your wife in bed with your best friend or finding out your kid isnt yours.
Neither one of those things would bother me very much.
