Red Sox signed OF Bobby Kielty to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Kielty was released by the A's on August 1 and could join the Red Sox as a platoon partner for J.D. Drew after getting some at-bats in the minors.

Kielty is a solid hitter as they come against lefties, Sox gain a nice right handed batter off the bench with some glove. Wily Mo is likely to be DFA'd within the next week

Why should the Sox hold onto Pena? I was a big supporter of his but he wont have consistent success unless he has plenty of playing time... and thats not happening in Boston.

Maybe because Hinske has been worse than Pena?

how? Hinske is more versatile, better defensively, better OBP, better slugging, slightly worse average, HRs and RBIs almost identical despite Hinske with about 30 less ABs

If Kielty is recalled, it would appear to fill the role occupied by Wily Mo Pena, who is hitting .218.

Kielty, starting later on today for Pawtucket, has an out clause if he isnt promoted within a week

Anyways its obvious that the Sox have soured on Wily Mo. Why has Hinske been getting more starts in the outfield? Why last night when Manny was ejected, did they send the kid in to take over in left and bat clean up?

well he's cleared waivers so i'm guessing Kielty is up within that week and WMP is DFA'd or they work out a trade before then

Anyone think they DFA Hinske instead?

No, they are both terrible at the plate this year, but Hinske hits LH and plays many more positions fair to better than WMP does.

I throw the LH part in there because there are many more RH's then LH pitchers.

Either way hopefully WMP clears and gets better in AAA.

Seeing his first action at Triple-A, Bobby Kielty went 0-for-6 with five strikeouts in a doubleheader Wednesday.

Kielty hasn't played in a game since June 20, but striking out five times in six at-bats is showing more than a little rust. He may be further from a call-up than initially expected.

He should get called up and WMP sent packing. He's better defensively at the corners, and he's more than competent against LHP (.888 career OPS), which is why they picked him up.

Have they placed WMP on waivers yet? Another good option, possibly, is Piazza, who has already cleared waivers.

He cleared trade waivers.

Since Kielty hasnt played since June 20 Im sure theyre are just giving him some ABs until they call him up. Again Im surprised he cleared waivers (only owed $580K), oh well this now allows the Sox to trade him to any team
