Uh, Papelbon should be warming up. Not Okajima. Papelbon can go back-to-back days, especially when he basically hasn't been pitching at all since the all-star break. Not that I'm uncomfortable with Okajima closing out the game, but Papelbon should be closing the game IMO.

 

Now, they could just be warming Okajima up in case Delcarmen implodes also...

 

And Delcarmen bounces back to get the K after a shaky outing yesterday to get the K. God we have some damn good relievers this year (even Timlin has been lights out lately):

 

Lopez

Timlin

Delcarmen

Donnelly (he was pretty reliable when he was given the ball)

Okajima

Papelbon

Niiice MDC. Wouldn't mind sending him out for the 9th. Paps threw 26 pitches yesterday. MDC or Jima.

 

Eh, I still think they should throw Paps today and rest him tomorrow. It seems like he hasn't pitched at all recently. He had to work out some kinks yesterday, so let him get a chance to pitch a good ninth today.

I'd start the inning with MDC and have Paps warming up just in case. The reason being is it saves your best relievers for tomorrow when you still have an excellent chance of winning tonight.

 

And Coco continues to rake.

Good call. I would to. In a relief role, I think Tavarez can be counted on for one time through the lineup. And like you said, Snyder too (but in the same way as I have confidence in Tavarez...one time through the lineup). It's a complete 180 from last year. Relief help is not what we need at the deadline. We need a starting pitcher first and foremost. A bat would be nice too, but I would love a good veteran starter. An insurance run is 90 feet away with no outs. Let's get him home, boys.

Same time, the Sox have insurance down in Pawtucket in the form of Travis Hughes and Craig Breslow. This year's team is entering new territory: lights out bullpen top to bottom, and a lot more speed on the basepaths

I actually think a competent 4th OF should be the priority. I fully believe if Ellsbury was right handed he'd be perfect for the role.

 

I don't think any starter is going to be available at the deadline. I think Schilling at 80% is better than anything you could get anyway.

After some short research, I was surprised to learn that Papelbon has only thrown on back to back days four times this year.

 

The lines of the 2nd of his 2 consecutive days:

 

IP H ER BB K

1 0 0 1 2

1 0 0 1 1

1 1 0 0 0

1 1 1 0 2

 

Note: I have no idea how to do a chart. But here's the total numbers: 4 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts.

we absolutely need to give Tito a reliable pinch hitting option off the bench. and that isnt something that should cost all that much

I can understand that. Some will disagree with me completely, some will agree. You can't go wrong with picking either of them IMO.

 

The home plate ump has been all over the place tonight. It's frustrating. At least we're winning.

Good points on both accounts. Something in me still says that Buehrle's available depsite the contract extension (the White Sox didn't want to give him a no-trade clause and an extension was the first step towards a deal). If Buehrle is truly unavailable, then I agree with you in that Schilling is probably the best realistic option we have.

 

Now that I think about it, you're probably right about the 4th OF being the highest priority. Hinske is a nice lefty with some pop in the bat to have off the bench, but he's probably a 5th OF for us. WMP needs to start if he's going to be effective consistently. Considering that he won't get enough at bats here to be that contributer, he's gotta go. He'll be a tremendous contributing power bat for a team some day, but not for us. Any ideas on who the 4th OF could be?

Yesss Sox win, 60-39, back to 21 games above .500

 

Lester returns to the majors from fighting cancer and notches a W :) Like last year, the 4th gave him the most trouble but he got out of yet another jam. He should have a good outing when he gets the D-Rays next at the Trop

 

Another great outing by the bullpen, MDC capping it off with his first career save

 

The Sox offense has held their own whil Ortiz has been sidelined. 35 runs over the last 4 games

 

Tomorrow Doce-K vs Sabathia... now if Dice could just keep his walks down, he should be good to go

I think the radar gun was very slow in this game, it had MDC throwing 90-91 when we know he's usually around 95, so Lester's 88 was probably a 92-93.

I don't quite know who the 4th OF would be. As much as the thread was mocked, Reggie Sanders wouldn't be the worst option. We need someone in the mold.

 

I made fun of Fred for it, but maybe a guy like Xavier Nady?
