Since early in 2006 Mike Timlin has showed that he wasn't the same pitcher that he was years back. I believe that the Red Sox surprised most by resigning Timlin for 2007. Timlin not only has had health issues in 2007 but when he has pitched he has been hit very hard, there has been some talk that his goal its to had pitched in 1000 ML games and coming into 2007 he only needed 39 games, but would the Red Sox let him taking a beating just to reach that goal? francona has shown that he would play or pitch his favorites at whatever cost.

its a valid point to bring up, its most likely just a difficult reality to face considering what he's done for the organization for several years now. but all signs point to a tough business decision that will have to be made....

Timlin has been with the Sox for 5 years now and is labeled as the "captain of the bullpen", as BoSox said it would be a tough decision for the Sox to make. I was shocked last offseason when he re-signed rather than retire

Baseball is a business and really has no place for "sentiment" when it is clearly a bad business decision. Mike Timlin has been absolutely horrible the last season and a half. I don't care what personal goals he is going for or what he has done for the organization. If he can't get the job done he doesn't deserve to pitch. It's as simple as that. In professional sports, you have to earn your job and continue to perform well to keep your job. Yes Timlin has been great for us in the past, but that is the past. Having him pitch has hurt our team. Calling it quits on him will only make our bullpen better, and in a business, you have to make the moves that makes your business (team) better.

I bet the Sox wait to see what they have with Donnelly coming off the DL until they make a decision with Timlin.

I think he's cooked, but I also think if Donnelly's hurt you have to trade for a BP arm, but if not you can DL Timlin and call up a guy like Breslow.

DFA Timlin, get Brad Lidge. I've heard Lidge's name being thrown around the block. He'd be a very nice complement to this bullpen. Probably would not come very cheap; he's been good since his dismissal from closer duties.

He was on EEI a little while ago and said retirement isn't even in his sights. Being DFAed might be a bit of a reality check though if it comes to that. For his sake, I'm hoping he strings together a few good innings and turns it around

I've never liked Timlin. Our BP was fine without him, and now he returns and the BP ERA skyrockets. Who cares about the past, if he hurts our chances to win now, get rid of him. I would wait it out for 3 more appearances and see how he does.

The guy's toast. How many back-to-back homeruns are we going to need to see? How many more bad outings? DFA his ass' date=' and bring up Breslow. I can't wait until we have Donnelly back.[/quote']He's starting to act like one of those old guys that blames everything but himself when he starts to lose it.

That is an interesting thing I havent yet really gotten around to thinking about. Donnelly's returning from the DL very shortly. Lopez shouldnt go since he's been a good lefty specialist for the Sox. And MDC while having spurts of control is still a damn better pitcher than Timlin is at this time of his career

MDC will go down because he's got options. They'll give Timlin more time. I don't think there is much left in the tank, but if there is, he has the experience, professionalism and poise that MDC does not have yet.

how have you never liked Timlin? without Timlin, there's a solid chance we don't win in '04 and he was lights out in '05

In his Red Sox career he has 26 saves in 48 opportunities. I know he's not a closer but that is not good. He has blown plenty of saves in the 8th inning as well. In his "Lights Out" year in 2005 he blew 7 saves. The only thing different in '05 for Timlin that made him have a successful year is that he only gave up 2 HR's all year.

yea, he had 7 blown saves in 80 innings. Papelbon had 6 blown saves in 68 innings last season, you gonna say he sucked too?

Papelbon had a lot more save opportunities than Timlin.

Timlin was 13/20. Papelbon was 35/41.

Timlin 2004 Save%: 65%

Papelbon 2006 Save%: 85%

There is quite a difference.

all I'm saying is the year Timlin had in 2005 is considered a very good season for any reliever

Really sad to see this. I hated when we had to let go of Embree, not that I didnt agree with the move......but because I liked the guy so much. I think its time though.

After him, we will be left with 7 guys remaining from that 04 team. After Schilling this year, possibly Wake and Mirabelli and Manny the following year we will be left with Youk, Ortiz, and Tek from that team....crazy to think about.

Timlin had a very good 2005, not 2004, his time to move on has come, but with anything with francona he falls in love with players and won't let go until it will hurt the team, but the time is now.

Tito - "Timlin's shoulder is achy and we want to stay away from using him. We made the decision to not pitch him tonight."

Get the f*** out of here. What ********, this is inexcusable. DL Timlin and call up Breslow.

Timlin hasn't been the same since after that world baseball exhibition crap he pitched in last year. He had been a workhorse, and at his age he needed the winter off to rest. Instead, he wound up pitching competitively last February, logged a bunch of innings, started the season with a tiring arm which ran out of gas (off the top of my head by May/June). Now he's pushing it to pitch because at his age he can't afford the time he'd need to properly rehab his arm - he's wind up looking like damaged goods that are too old anyway.

I can see the Sox at the end of the season offering him a retirement day and still recognizing him for his contributions should he look to sign with someone else. You can't blame the guy for wanting to hang on another year if someone makes an offer - it's the greatest job in the world and it'd be worth a cool million or two not to hang up the spikes.

Craig Breslow is biding his time in Pawtucket while Tito tries to hang onto one of "his guys", Timlin. Sigh

Breslow in 2007, 35 appearances- 1-1, 2.53 ERA, .222 BAA

53.1 innings, 44 Hits, 21 Runs (15 ER), 5 HRs, 17 Walks, 55 Ks

Last year in Pawtucket, 39 appearances- 7-1, 7 saves, 2.69 ERA, .200 BAA

67 innings, 49 Hits, 21 Runs (20 ER), 3 HRs, 24 Walks, 77 Ks

As of late Mike Timlin has pitched very well. He's shown that when healthy, he is a very good and valuable pitcher. The problem has been staying healthy, and surprise, he's hurt again.

if Timlin isnt gonna hold up, they need to go out and get a righty setup man. Donnelly is nowhere close to returning and I still dont fully trust MDC yet
