LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt is going back on the disabled list because of a right shoulder problem. Schmidt was ineffective Saturday in his third start since missing 45 games because of bursitis in his shoulder, and admitted that something wasn't quite right.

"I just haven't felt like myself," he said.

Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said utilityman Marlon Anderson, who underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery last month, will be activated and meet the team before Tuesday night's game in Toronto.

Long relievers Brett Tomko and Mark Hendrickson are the likely candidates to replace Schmidt in the rotation. Another option might be Chad Billingsley, who is 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA since April 29.

Schmidt, who signed a three-year, $47 million free-agent contract during the offseason, was placed on the disabled list in April after going 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA in three starts. He returned June 5 and threw six shutout innings in San Diego, consistently reaching 89 mph and topping out at 91.

But the 34-year-old right-hander didn't perform nearly as well in his last two starts, and his velocity was down. He gave up five hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings Saturday, walking four and striking out two to leave him with a 1-4 record and a 6.31 ERA.

Schmidt was to be examined Monday in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Rawitch said.

Anderson, a backup infielder and outfielder, experienced lingering problems following offseason surgery, and he underwent surgery after an MRI exam May 7 revealed bone chips and scar tissue. He is hitting .222 in 18 at-bats.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

At this point who was the better signing, Zito or Schmidt?

W L K ERA
1 4 22 6.31

(3 year, 47 million)

W L K ERA
6 7 51 4.41

(7 years, 126 million.)

The good news is Bills is ready to step in, and Schmidt will be off the books after 2 more seasons. & the A's showed everyone the formula to beating Zito is to stack the lineup with lefties because the junk he throws is always left over the plate to lefties.

Zito? Thank f***in' God we didn't sign Zito. Fenway, more specifically the Green Monster, eats up soft-tossing lefties (unless it's the home team that's facing him...sigh). I've also just never been THAT impressed by Zito over the course of his career, especially recenty...minus his 12-6 curveball.

Anyway, the Dodgers can handle the DL stint thanks to their depth. Like someone already said, Bills can step in and he'll do more than an adequate job in filling in for Schmidt.

As far as who was the better signing? Schmidt. Zito's signing is probably the biggest rip off I've ever seen in a baseball contract. Yes, worse than Gil Meche's.

lolz. i was worried he was damaged goods when he was signed, unless he can relearn how to pitch without the velocity he's used to having....then he's done. i'd send him on rehab assignment down at AAA until he can regain his condfidence and show that he belongs in the rotation.

Sucks for the Dodgers.

Which was a worse signing: Drew, Lugo, or Schmidt?

Think both teams are in the same boat. They all look like bad signings right now, and both teams are winning. It may turn out Schmidt's deal is the best because it is the shortest.

They're going down the shitter. Would it be easy to get him for nothing in exchange for paying his salary?

Maybe. I'm not too fond of trading within your own division, but in this case, the O's are going nowhere fast with Angelos.

That sucks. Way to go' date=' Ned, you f***ing *******. Maybe he can teach Pierre to pitch and make up for that stupid deal too.[/quote']

Or just have his passport mysteriously disappear in Toronto.

It's astounding how many dollars the Dodgers lose to injury every year. It always seems the high-priced horses are the ones that end up lame. Kevin Brown, Lowe and now Schmidt.

I just hope that now Grady gives Billingsley a shot to prove himself. That guy's got nasty stuff.

Lowe has never been on the DL in his stint with the Dodgers.

Zito's deal is a huge rip off, but atleast he's on the field. Mike Hampton's contract is the biggest rip-off in baseball history.

I would have to go with Chan Ho Park. 65 million for a Number 7.
