This is why you don't worry when you get swept by the Yanks and still have a 5-game lead when all is said and done. There's a lot of baseball left to be played and there's still every opportunity for the Yanks to play like s***.

I've said it before, the Yankees needed that series a hell of a lot more than the Red Sox did and the Yankees came out and played like it. And they might've done so at the cost of the Tigers series and the D-Rays and Mariners series' by first looking past the Tigers and then suffering from something of a let down in those "meaningless" games against the Devil Rays (obviously, note the quotation marks around meaningless). Is that the case? Can't say for sure but it is plausible, no?

I was' date=' and Im sure some other posters on this board would agree, just caught up in the moment that is a Sox/Yankees series[/quote']

In other words, you were being a pantywaist.

Yanks up by four over the Tigers....looks like the field is pretty much set, with the Yankees, Red Sox, Guardians, and Angels. Now it's just the pairing that matters.

I feel pretty confident in saying that this race is all over.

It's kind of hard to see the defending AL champs, and the sexy pick this year, just rolling over. Because of that, I'm not counting the Tigers out. With that being said, I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't expect the Mariners to make a shocking comeback, so it's pretty much a two team race.

The Yankees have a favorable schedule down the stretch, although they have the disadvantage of only have one more off day. I'm curious to see what they do with the rotation, especially if Clemens proves himself healthy and Mussina pitches strong against Toronto.

If you do the math, it looks extremely good for the Yanks, but I'm not admitting it's over just yet. The next week should determine if the Tigers have a chance or not.

having 6 against Baltimore when Bedard' date=' Guthrie, Ray, and Olson are out and Trachsel is in Chicago can only be good for us.[/quote']

Completely agreed there. It would really be a boost, if Halladay and Accardo can get eight more outs without giving up a run.

EDIT: Hector Luna just made a terrific play to rob Polanco behind the third base bag. Six outs to go.

EDIT 2: Zumaya left the game with what looked like some sort of finger issue.

John Gibbons better have a good f***ing excuse for not going to Accardo. Let them right back in the f***ing race. Piece of s***.

EDIT: He had announced before the game that he was going to a closer by committee. Still doesn't excuse the fact that he let Janssen stay in when he clearly couldn't get anyone out.

EDIT 2: This could be exactly what the Tigers need to spark themselves. This is why I'm not counting the Tigers out. Great win tonight from them.

Alright, well, Detroit is losing 11-0 after seven innings today in game one of a double-header against the Texas Rangers.

And not that it really matters anymore, but Seattle lost again last night.

That regression to the mean is painful to watch' date=' ain't it?[/quote']

Actually, I expected teams like the Mariners to play really well all season.

They play the game the right way, and they're always hustling.

Unless the Twins have a comeback in them the Yanks wildcard lead will be down to 2.5.

EDIT: Matt Lecroy, Luis Rodriguez, and Nick Punto due up in the ninth against Todd Jones down 4-3. Honestly, if I could have any combination of three hitters in an AL lineup, this might be my last choice.

EDIT 2: Jason Tyner pinch hit for Matt Lecroy and flew out. What the f*** is Gardenhire thinking?

Yup. What is scary is that Zumaya was excellent tonight. In the seventh inning he came in with the score 4-3, runners on first and second, and one out. He got Joe Mauer to bounce in a doubleplay and retired Hunter, Morneau, and Cuddyer in order inthe ninth.

I just want to hear people like Jacko and Gom back up the statements that the wild card is a lock, especially considering how well Detroit is playing right now.

The Tigers won a game Johan Santana pitched that Yorman Bazardo started for them.

Let that sink in for a second, and tell me anything is a freaking lock.

Haha, yeah, the Tigers are really on a role right now. For what it's worth, I can't blame Santana in the least. He had a rough first inning, but he ended up pitching a really good game. Credit to the Tigers bullpen though, they did a terrific job tonight.

I'm going to take a look at the schedule's of both team, and then I think I might do my version of the "KiloMetric" for both teams.

Honestly I rolled my eyes when I saw Gom stating that this by no means is a big series for the Yankees. It sure as hell is. If the Yanks didnt come back from behind last night, we'd be talking about New York looking at a 1.5 game lead

their tough series starts in 2 days. We face Baltimore 6 times who are without any of their pitchers who hurt us (Guthrie, Olsen, Bedard, Trachsel). We face TB 3 times in Tampa and we get Toronto 4 times at home. And as we saw, Toronto has damn near given up. We have a 3 game lead in the L column as well. It would take one hell of a choke job by us or one hell of a run by them to drop this thing. Either way, if we gain even one more game in the L column on them, it is over. If we go 7-7 over our last 14 game, they need to go 9-4 just to tie which includes 3 against Cleveland and another tilt with Minny and Santana. And that is assuming we go .500 against the worst competition baseball has to offer.

We finished our last tough game of the season (sans the one time we face Halladay) with a 3 game L column lead. We showed once again that we are the sox daddies by taking 9 of the last 12 including the last 4 of 6 in the fens. Right now the Guardians and the Angels are tied for the 2nd best record in the league and if things break right for us, we could be starting our series in the Jake while you guys start yours in Fenway knowing you have a cross country trip or two in your future. Either way, the WC is in our hands, we have 13 games left, 6 against Baltimore without any of their pitchers, 3 in Tampa against the hapless Rays, and 4 home vs Toronto who have already packed it in. If we lose this, it would be one hell of a collapse.

Oh and btw. Saying that the WC is not over is akin to saying the division is not over as we are only 4 back in the L column for the division while the Tigers are 3 back. Very similar circumstances. Both teams leading said races have cupcakes the rest of the way and it would take a monumental collapse to see a change at the top.

If things break right for you? There are no breaks, if the teams finish as they are now, with the Sox having the best record, the Guardians and Angels tied, and the Yankees as the WC, then where you go is entirely up to the Sox. For a guy who thinks he knows so much, you miss on facts a whole lot.

I think the point of his post was to look at what could happen with the games left, erego the "if" remark. I don't really see anything he said that sounded misinformed.

He referenced the fact CLE and LA are tied before the "if", so he's making it dependent on how they finish relative to each other. He's not aware of the new rule.
