Look, a sweep would have been the biggest momentum boost for the Yankees. They'd be 7.5 out and riding high.

But the fact that Julian Tavarez saved the series (well, him and Javier Lopez), means 3 days are off the calendar and you only gained one game. Winning 2/3 in the Bronx will always be a tough task. Just like next weekend, I expect the Sox to take 2/3.

Look, we dont have a lot of wiggle room anymore. You guys coming out of the gates blazing and us being wildly inconsistent have put us here. But any series that drops our deficit is good news.

Gom's suddenly a bit optimistic... not too long ago he was proclaiming the Yankees dead. What happened?

We faced your 3 best pitchers this series, and you faced Wakefield, Tavarez, and Schilling. Not THAT impressive. You can bank the fact that the Red Sox expect nothing less than returning the favor, at the minimum, next weekend. If that happens or if we sweep you, you're in trouble. If the Yanks take 2/3 again, well, it'll start to get interesting.

I have lost no faith in this club at all. You never see a lineup like the Yankees' unless you play them, so as long as we keep feasting on the teams like we have been, there's nothing to worry about. This whole next week will be a challenge though. The Rangers' pitchers suck, yes, but that offense is starting to click. They've had a boatload of homeruns recently, and Cleveland is obviously no team to sneeze at. The Sox really need to take this series against the Rangers while the Yanks have their hands full with the Angels. For some reason Anaheim always seems to give the Yanks fits. Drop the Yanks back down into a double digit deficit and I'll be happy. Then we have the Yanks for the weekend and Beckett will be back by then. Should be interesting.

Schill did not look so good in his last 2 outings against the yankees . I might be just a lil worried .. but 9 and half game lead he should be fine .

I just got home too. Hit the bars after the game.

The truth is, the Sox didn't look too good in this series. They were never really in the games they lost, and the Yankees fell apart after yet another bad call by the umps this year that went against them. If not for that call, a sweep was definitely a possibility.

9.5 games is still a tremendous number to make up, but if there is one thing I took away from this series is that both Mussina and Schilling are finished as top of the rotation starters. To tell you the truth, Tavarez scares me more than Schilling at this point. In fact, the only way Schilling beats the Yankees this year is if he faces Mussina, or vice versa.

It seems like the Yankees have the rotation setup for the advantage again next series. I personally would like to see Dice and Beckett face off against Wang and Pettitte.

Anyways, a good series against the Sox for my boys. All I am hoping for is for a Sox lead of 5 games by July 1st. If we can make up 4.5 games in 5 weeks, it's a race. Other than that, it's over, IMHO.

You guys are making a huge thing of this Arod thing. He slid into second base, and bumped Pedroia. Big deal. I like baseball when it is played with a bit of an edge. I personally think umpires warning benches is ridiculous. Let the players police themselves.

Other notes from this series....

1)Farnsworth is garbage.

2)If you neutralize Papi, the Sox are most likely going to lose, and he looked most uncomfortable up there against Pettitte. It seems to me that Manny is having more trouble with that low outside slider than I have ever seen.

3)Tito stays with his starters a little too long, and Torre pulls them if their heart rate jumps over 60 beats per minute.

4) The Yankees seem to have figured out how to beat Wakefield.

5) Wang seems to have figured that against the Red Sox, throwing the same pitch 850 times in a row is a bad idea.

6) Arod is owning your pitching. Say what you want about clutch, etc., but if I were the Sox, I would walk that guy every time up. He has murdered you guys.

The Angels seem to have our number, so 2 out of 3 is nearly a must for us to build on this momentum.

That is all.

sox didn't look good in this series? the sox hadn't lost a series since april 24 it was bound to happen , its not because we were facing that great yankee team , f*** gom we cant win em all ,and were gonna have slumps here and there

the only reliable on your staff so far is pettitte , wang is up and down, mussina stinks, and the rest ?? they stink too

arod blowing our pitching?? take the first game away when he hit 2HR and he hasent really done anything against us

IMO, no lead is safe. This ain't over by a long shot as I suspect if the Yanks smell any chance of playoffs they'll pull off a trade where they're eating the salary of some player and thus have to give up little to get him.

When the dregs of the league become sellers I expect that the Yankees wil be buying, and will effectively improve their team.

Wow don't know what happened in that one the Sox were just flat and Schilling really wasn't himself. Hopefully Dice-K gives us a better effort on Friday night. Going to be a good game I'm looking forward to it already.

Has it occurred to any Yankee fans that there is just as much, if not more, of a chance of the Yankees getting swept than the other way around when Boston comes to town?

Look, a Yankee sweep makes this a race. Anything else is just a waste.

Gom... that first game against Wake the Sox ended up losing by just 1 run, was because of Wakefield's inept run support. The Sox were facing f***ing Kei Igawa and couldnt do anything against him. In his last 9 losses, the Sox have given him a total of 10 runs of support. But yep Wakefield throws the exact same pitch 850 times in a row and thats why he's a horrible pitcher. 15 years in the bigs, 155 Ws, he deserves to be kicked in the ass

Im sorry but Wang has figured out the Red Sox? He still allowed a lot of base runners in his last start and was beat by Tavarez last month. Dont forget also that he was opposed by Wakefield... good hunch he'll have luck on his side with Wakefield's bad luck with the Sox never backing him up with runs.

They lost that Wake game 3-1 BTW

Wang figured out that his sinker is more effective against the Sox if he mixes it up with something else. Which is why he had a more successful start against the Sox.

As for Wakefield, he doesn't have another pitch. When your fastball tops out at 77 MPH, you have to throw the knuckleball. The Yankees have finally remembered the old adage against knuckle ball pitchers:

If it's high, let it fly, if it's low, let it go."

Nah, it's a waste. So we gained one game in the standings. Big deal. It's a good series for them, but nothing to write home about.

Truthfully, if the Yankees had swept the Sox, I'm pretty sure most of you guys would feel a little tight around the collar. Losing 2 out of 3 in the Stadium isn't much.

Now, a sweep for the Yankees in Boston would be HUGE.

However, I am hoping/praying for two out of three.

Let's see what happens when you go up against our ace next weekend.

Wang allowed a lot of baserunners in that "successful" start. I tend to think the final ER line was more a function of luck than anything else. And take the "success" with this rather large grain of salt. It's the first time he's ever done that. In other words, it's totally contrary to the scouting report. No more element of surprise.

Take the draft picks and move on

Its time to take the draft picks and show the big mouth the door at the end of the year. Seems a bit harsh doesn't it? Well its the right move to do. What I watched at Yankee Stadium last night was an embarrassment. 12 hits in 6 innings while giving up 5 earned runs and two home runs including one to the immortal Doug Mientkiewicz. Just an absolute disgrace.

This is the guy that was tabbed our opening day starter. He is also the same guy that had the nerve to approach Theo Epstein about a contract extension in spring training let alone he came into the year fat and out of shape. Bravo Theo for not bending over back for this guy. Frankly what has this guy done to deserve a contract extension? He is no longer the ace of the staff let alone he thinks he is since he was tabbed the opening day starter. In my mind both Beckett and Matsuzaka have passed him and its not even close. Should this team make the playoffs Beckett should start Game 1 and Matsuzaka Game 2. Schilling should consider it a privilege to even start Game 3 with the way Wakefield has pitched early on.

Through 10 starts this year, Schilling has already given up 74 hits in 64 innings. On top of that he has already given up a team high 8 home runs while already issuing 15 walks. In 2006 Schilling walked a total of 28 batters in 31 starts. Opponents have loved to face Schilling the past 3 years to the tunes of .314, .276 and .287 respectively. Granted he was hurt for most of 2005 but it showed he was no longer the same pitcher as he was in 2004.

He may be a 200 game winner but what he has shown this year is an inability to pitch well against great lineups. His fastball is in the low 90's now and his command has been lacking throughout the year. Is this really a guy Red Sox fans want to give a 2-3 year contract extension to? I sure do not. Anyone who comes into spring training completely out of shape should not deserve a contract extension. Schilling had his chance to get in better shape but he did not. Right now he looks like an National League pitcher who should go back to the National League after 2007. Going back to the senior circuit he has a chance to pad his stats for Cooperstown instead of getting pounded here in the powerful American League.

So Curt, it was great having you here for 2004 but right now I ask; What have you done for me lately? Can you be that ace again? Its doubtful in my mind and with that the Red Sox should take the draft picks and move on.

Draft picks? What draft picks? You have to offer Schilling arbitration to get those. Since they won't reduce the arbitration award from his current salary, that is a defacto extension. I agree with letting him go based on his performance thus far, but they'll get nothing out of it.

700's best bud' date=' Jsinger, chiming in on Curt at soxprospects.com[/quote']I still would not be surprised if Schilling is the team's ace by the end of the year. It's ridiculous to be jumping on a guy whose ERA remains under 4 even though he has hit a rough spot.

I thought they changed that rule last year because teams were taking advantage of it. I don't think you automatically get draft picks for FA losses anymore.

Hahaha oh man.

Your love for certain players on this team is astounding.

Youkilis has been our offensive MVP so far. What? Run him out of town?

Schilling has been half good half terrible. That's worth $15 million?
