Could he be a realistic option to be used later this season?

He pitched really well yesterday against a good ballclub, and it seems that at the very least he would be a serviceable set up guy in August/September, especially given out southpaw-thin bullpen.

What are your thoughts.

Gabbard isn't a set up guy. They won't use him out of the bullpen. He does have great stuff and mound presence and could realistically be our 5th guy till lester comes back. He should have been all along, because he has much better stuff than tavarez.

I hope they give him Beckett's starts until he returns from the DL. If he continues to pitch well, move Tavarez to the pen and give Gabbard the #5 spot. Tavarez is more valuable out of the pen, not rotation.

They have three lefties in the bullpen.

Seriously, does anyone on this website look up stuff before they post? (Exception of a few)

What's his long-term future with the Sox? I like what I've seen so far but he deosn't really resonate much from an organizational standpoint. Anyone have any insight as to why he's not looked more favorably upon?

He's looked upon favorably enough. No one would honestly put him above Schilling, Beckett, Dice-K, Wakefield, Tavarez or Lester and he's definitely passed Hansack as the "7th starting pitcher".

All the conjecture I've heard (basically WEEI and message boards), no one seems to have him in the '08 rotation. I guess a lot depends on Shill's future but I'd love to see him penciled in there.

I don't see him in the '08 rotation. even if Schill leaves, it looks like this:

Beckett

Dice-K

Lester

Wakefield

Buchholz/Tavarez

I really hope he would not be in the 08 rotation. As BoSox21 said, we have a lot of guys ahead of him in line: Beckett, Dice, Lester, Wake, Buchholz, Tavarez, and the possible FA or trade acquisition (Zambrano/Buehrle?). He's an emergency starter, and a possible long reliever.

Is Buchholz going to be ready for next year? As great as Tavarez has been, do the Sox think of him as a viable option to start or just a fill in guy?

Since when is it a given that a young pitcher can't make the jump from Double AA to the Majors? From what I hear Bucholz is doing in Portland and what I saw of him down in Fort Myers this kid has the moxie to make the move effectively, and it would great to blend him into a rotation with Lester, Matsuzaka, Beckett, and whatever guy winds up in the fifth spot----Wakefield, Gabbard, Methusala???? I've finally come to the realization that Schilling is finishing up his last year with us, sad to say.
