frankly, he's still a cheater to me. but this is exactly what I am hoping from everyone associated with MLB during the steroids era.

'I was wrong'

Giambi says baseball should apologize for steroid era

CHICAGO (AP) -- New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi says Major League Baseball should apologize to the public for its widespread performance-enhancing drug problem.

Claiming he's likely been tested for performance-enhancing drugs more often than anyone, Giambi told USA Today in a story on its Web site Friday that the apology is long overdue.

"I was wrong for doing that stuff," Giambi told the newspaper Wednesday before the Yankees played the Chicago White Sox. "What we should have done a long time ago was stand up -- players, ownership, everybody -- and said: 'We made a mistake.'

"We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and gone forward. ... Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it."

Giambi reportedly told a grand jury during the BALCO investigation in December 2003 that he used steroids and human growth hormone. He told USA Today this week he's thankful for MLB's testing program for steroids and amphetamines that was revised before last season. MLB does not test for HGH, but Giambi said he does not use the drug.

"Unfortunately, [the rumors] are going to be a part of it. But that's OK. I'm probably tested more than anybody else. I'm not hiding anything," he said. "That stuff didn't help me hit home runs. I don't care what people say, nothing is going to give you that gift of hitting a baseball."

February 2005, comments from Jason Giambi:

"There's been a lot of distraction, definitely, over the last year, and I'm sorry for that, I really am," Giambi said. "I feel I let down the fans, I feel I let down the media, I feel I let down the Yankees -- not only the Yankees, but my teammates.

"I accept full responsibility for that," he went on. "I'm sorry, but I'm trying to go forward now. Most of all, to the fans, I'm sorry. I know it's going to be hard, and I understand how they feel."

Net time, try quoting the whole article.

He explicitly says that he did steroids and was wrong in doing so. Unlike some others [bonds, Ortiz, etc.], at least he's man enough to come out and say so.

Doing steroids is wrong, and cheating, but at least he's clean and fessed up.

When asked, "So why did you take steroids?" Giambi told the newspaper "Maybe one day I'll talk about it, but not now."

Entering Friday's game against the New York Mets, Giambi was hitting .273 (33 for 121) with five home runs and 18 RBIs. He has recently been hampered by a bone spur in his left heel.

Why should the MLB apologize? Sure they could have done better testing but after decades of it never really being an issue and players are trusted to have the right judgment, why should you test test and test? Now that it's out, testing should get stricter, but people like Giambi need to shut up, and get a lifetime ban. And Bonds just needs to admit he juiced, but he never will. All he cares about is himself.

the part were he says that steriods did not help him hit homeruns is just stupid. They may not help you hit a baseball but if you are able to do that at a major league level they most definately help you hit the long ball.

i do think that a public apology by selig, whoever is the president of the Players Association, and all of the most recognizable players linked with steriods would go a long way with the media and may help end this whole scandal sooner. But to be realistic thats not going to happen any time soon.

So where in that article does he explicitly say he took steroids?

the "I was wrong for doing that stuff' date='" part[/quote']

That's not explicit.

Can MLB just say we apologize because we let players take stuff?
