rotoworld--

Red Sox acquired LHP Daniel Haigwood from the Rangers in exchange for RHP Scott Shoemaker and cash considerations.

A nice pickup for the Red Sox. Shoemaker is a non-prospect, and the cash may prove more useful to the Rangers after Haigwood was designated for assignment last week. Haigwood, who was traded from the White Sox to the Phillies in the Jim Thome deal and then sent to Texas for Fabio Castro last summer, has a career record of 35-18 with a 3.43 ERA in the minors. The left-hander has a mediocre fastball, but with a quality change and curve, he could make it as a fourth or fifth starter. It's unlikely that he'll make an impact with the Red Sox this season.

Haigwood is not over-powering as he throws in the low 90s. He does, however, keep hitters off balance with his myriad of pitches: a four-seam fastball, a sinker, a curveball (which is his best pitch), and an improving changeup.

We said that about Bryan Corey last year :) ;)

Isn't Corey pretty good, why isn't he in the majors?

I hear Haigwood is going to be pretty good, I hope...

there it is' date=' the missing piece. WE'RE GOING TO THE SERIES, BOYS!!!!![/quote']

Right Bo!!!! Amazing that some of our friends here think this guy is going to somehow be a key pitcher for us down the road. If we was so damn good Texas would not have designated him for assignment, nor would he have been passed around like the sweet potatoes at a Thanksgiving dinner. I read Corey and Burns all over this guy; and where are they now?

I wouldn't get too excited about a 23 year old in AA. Especially one with a "mediocre" fastball.

Yes, it's nice that he's a lefty with good K/9 throughout the minors but his high walk rates (6.39 and 4.50 BB/9 before and after being traded last year, and a 4.37 minor league average) are troublesome to me. He keeps the ball in the ballpark and has an OK hit rate but again, this guy's prospect status is up in the air.

On the other hand Shoemaker is only better statwise in that he doesn't walk as many hitters as Haigwood does. The control advantage is significant but overall sounds like a wait and see trade. I'd say chances are slim either one of these guys makes a significant MLB impact in their careers.

All that being said though, I'd take the guy who's lefthanded, 2 years younger with stronger strikeout and homer rates so I'd rather have Haigwood right now.

You got that from what people have posted in this thread?

I know they were kidding Jackson. I was referring to you with that post. You tried to make it sound like he might actually be worth a gamble, but I guess I had better rework my comedy routine. Well, how is this for some humor.

Three dead bodies turn up at the mortuary, all with very big smiles on their facaes. The coroner calls the police to tell them what has happened.

The coroner tells the Inspector: "First body is a 72 year odl Frenchman. He died of heart failure while with his mistress. Hence the enormous smile.

"The second body is an Irishman, 25 years of age. He won a thousand dollars on the lottery and spent it all on whiskey. Died of alcohol poisoning, hence the smile.

The Inspector asked, "What of the third body?

"Ah, says the coroner, "This is the most unusual one...Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, 66, struck by lightning."

"Why is she smiling then?" inquires the Inspector.

"She thought she was having her picture taken."
