I might be old school on this, but I consider that bad and risky baseball. The true test on this is to see what managers do in the playoffs. If this were October, I would bet any manager would bunt in that situation, with the exception of a 3 or 4 spot hitter up.

Dusty Baker would have definitely bunted in that situation.

 

BTW, this is from Manny Acta from the Washington Nationals

 

It's been proven to me that a guy at first base with no outs has a better chance to score than a guy at second base with one out. That has been proven to me with millions of at-bats. I don't like moving guys over from first to second unless the pitcher is up or it is real late in the game.

 

I could see where it's late in the game, but the Royals still have nine more outs, and against a fragile Red Sox middle relief. We needed to go for more than one run.

 

It didn't work this time, but Francona made the right call allowing Lugo and Youkilis to take their cuts and get on for Ortiz.

 

This strategy isn't new. It's what made the Red Sox offense the best in the game from 2003-2005.
