I still think Papelbon should be closer. I'd want Tavarez or Lester in the #5 spot.

I just hope Lester is over his cancer well enough to hold up.

Tavarez OR Lester? Like their interchangeable?

:dunno:

From that list Id say Kason Gabbard. He did a good job up in the bigs' date=' posting a 3.51 ERA including the 7 shutout innings against the White Sox. He also has just had a productive ST[/quote']

Are you an idiot?

Gabbard walked more batters than he struck out last year, and allowed nearly a hit per inning. Gabbard really doesn't have the stuff to sustain that low hit ratio, and when you don't have the stuff you better have the control. Gabbard, has neither of those.

Papelbon IS the closer and SHOULD be the closer. Period. He wants to be and the team desperately needs it. On top of that, he was AMAZING closing last year. Why on earth would you want to change his role when he was amazing at it last year? Keeping him the closer is the best decision.

I like Tavarez as the #5 starter to begin the season and then give the spot to Lester once he is ready mid-season. Maybe we'll pick up Clemens and put him in the #5 spot later in the season.

Also, what if Tavarez actually does a great job as a starter? Would you still give his spot up to Lester mid-season, or would you let Lester stay in AAA and let Tavarez stay in the rotation? Would you fool with something that was working just to get Lester into the roster? I think we should only bring Lester in mid-season if Tavarez is struggling in anyway. If he is solid, I'd let Lester take his time coming back and keep him in AAA.

Ted, Tavarez did not do all that well as a starter last yr. He was very lucky. You put 3 baserunners on every 2 innings and dont have lights out stuff, something is amiss. If he is handed the ball every 5th day for a yr, he will be over a 5ERA.

I agree with Jackson, his whip was around a a buck fifty, wed be better off with Hansack or something. Until Lester is ready of course.

Why?

Elite starters > Elite closers

PERIOD.

I never saw Hansack pitch because of cable problems, but he is interesting to me. I'd go with Snyder right now.

Actually my order would be Snyder/Gabbard/Tavarez until Lester arrives. I hope Rocket never leaves Houston.

They have both been great this spring so far. Snyder, one could say, is healthy for the first time in a looooong time. I really don't know what he can become.

Stifler is still a work in progress and a lefty who, when he's on, is pretty damn good. Did I mention he's a lefty??? Either way, they are both placeholders.

I think the most intriguing option is Hansack. His endurance probably needs a little work, but he brings something to the table that is important, IMO. He pounds the strike zone. He's got good control of 3 or more pitches. It isn't plus plus stuff, but he can put it where he wants. I think this would make him pretty effective pitching to contact, and at a minimum it would make the other team earn it.

Read again. He said elite starter. Papelbon, whether or not he was pitching as the 4th pitcher for the Sox, could be an elite starter. We do know if he will be without giving him a shot, and now we may never know.
