timlin is 41 and has sucked his entire career as a closer, not to mention he hasnt really pitched well in a while

he can no longer pitch with runners on base and that isnt suitable for a closer

pineiro has been falling like a meteor for 2 years

hes the only pitcher in the american league that i know took a pay cut this season

of course it makes sense that the sox,,with a 200M payroll,,would pencil this guy in as a closer...

donnellys #s have been falling for a couple years as well

of the 3

i like him so far

of course theyre a week into the competetion so lets hope someone steps up and claims the job as opposed to winning by default

This is not a matter of good pitchers working out the kinks in ST. There is a lack of talent in that bullpen. Theo needs to get Hansen back on the field and performing well and then package him to the Nats for Cordero.

i have a feeling that this year, we'll have 3-5 different closers

once one guy blows a save, the next guy will have a chance until he blows one, then the next guy.

I can already see the media blowing the closer role way out of proportion form day 1, once one guy blows a save, they will be all over him. Same will happen after another guy blows a save.

my guess is that by August we will see paps in the 9th

note the multiple times the word blow is used here

blow

as in suck

blown

unable to finish

200M payroll and we dont have a f***ing bullpen

I will remind everyone again of 2003...the year of the "closer by committee".

The closer situation was a bit of a mess throughout the year. BY Kim led the team in saves in the regular season. Next was Brandon Lyon followed by Chad Fox who had a few saves.

On July 29 the Sox picked up Scott Williamson from the Reds and used him primarily as a set-up man...but he was so good that they ended up having him close in the playoffs. In The Divisional series he was 2-0 without giving up an earned run. In the ALCS he had 3 saves, a 3.00 era, 6 k's in 3 innings of work.

Despite the analysts claims that the Sox had no BPand thus no chance, the Red Sox had continued auditioning for the closers job throughout the year and went with the hottest hands in the roles of closer and set-up guys (left-righty were Embree and Timlin, respectively) at playoff time.

All these guys did was provide some of the strongest relief pitching we've ever seen. And only Grady Little's decision, in my own strong opinion, to have Pedro start the 8th inning of game 7, stood between the Red Sox and a trip to the World Series.

While its not ideal to go into the season without a set closer, I wouldn't get overly concerned at this juncture. If 2003 proved anything, it was that specialty roles can be filled effectively during the course of the season. Would I prefer to have a Mariano Riviera in the pen right now? Absolutely...but it is what it is and we'll see where this thing goes, who steps up and/or how much it costs the Sox to rectify the issue if no one does step up.

if you have the talent to make these matchups happen then its fine

do we even have a lefty in the pen?

you need 27 outs a game...if the starter can get 18-20 of them then we're in good shape

good starting efforts will eliminate a lot of bullpen innings

this is essential

if we have the same results from our 4-5 starters as last year we are f***ed

I think we'll leave camp with at least two. Okajima and Romero, to start. Breslow has looked good and he'll be the first LHRP out of the 'buckett if needed.

If Hansen performs well why do we need to trade for Cordero?

what indication do we have that hansen is ready??

How about his 2.75 ERA in AAA last year. I know he wasn't that good in MLB but neither was Pedroia and no one seems to question him being up with the big club. Hansen dominated every level of minor league ball so far. He's ready for MLB.

i took issue with duddy pedroia given the job without performing

especially since we had a decent guy there fairly cheap to begin with

but anyways

this isnt the 2b job

its the closer

different mentality than any other spot in sports outside maybe kicker

275 era in pawtucket is good...if i were a pawsox fan id be encouraged

what were his #s in boston??

i dont know them off hand but i suspect they were rather gloomy

there is no indication of that, if he pitches well, he'll get a shot and if he keeps going throw him into some closing situations in which if he shuts the door then there's a our new closer...

if he fails, try again and send to AAA for some work, then back up for relief and see if made some progress then try him out again...

in other words... if he pitches well give him a shot to close... if not, send him to AAA to work on his stuff... of course he will most likely start off in AAA at the beginning anyway...

Hansen's knock has never been his stuff. He just folds when the pressure is on. Something you dont want in a closer. There isnt much explaining to be done. The kid is lights out untouchable in AAA and pretty damn good in mop up duty. Give him the ball with the game on the line and he starts s***ing bricks.

When I said they need to get him on the field and performing well, I meant that he has to show that he is healthy and throwing well. He's not ready to be put in Cordero's league. He's nowhere close to that. He has potential, but that's it.

in the american league you will have maybe 6-7 maybe more teams pushing 90 wins

how long can we f*** around and still be competetive??

Pinero saw 4 batters today, walked one, k'd one w/ 2 fly outs, his ST ERA is now down to

yaaaay, close to single digits...

This was mentioned in the ST thread but Hansen gave up 4 hits and 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th allowing the Marlins to tie the game. Sox up 8-6 top of 10th.

Hansen's ST ERA is 27.00......uhhhhhhhhhh??????

You know, I could understand if a guy got pissed at repeatedly being called a faggot, but not if he kept sucking dick. Bottom line, if you don't like being made to look stupid, then stop making stupid posts.
