I find it interesting how the sox media rides him so hard. He puts up the numbers in the regular season and the posteseason and still plays more games than anyone on the team for the most part. Who cares if he demands star treatment, he is as close to a sure thing as they come.

I've gotta agree...he's not the leader that Tek or Schill is, but he's a superstar and produces year after year. IMO, he could skip Spring Training entirely if he wanted to, so long as he'll be ready to mash when the season starts.

I don't care. Bradford says the undisclosed illness is cancer.

Tavarez, who has known Ramirez since he was 17 years-old, said that Ramirez has been occupied with caring for his mother, who was thought to possibly have a cancerous tumor in her rib cage. After undergoing surgery, Tavarez said, she is doing fine. Both Manny and his mother are in Westin on the other side of Florida.

When he gets there, he works as hard as anyone else. He takes more swings than probably any two players, and last year he worked very hard on his fielding. I've been down to ST going on 5 years in a row and seen this guy work. At City of Palms Park on game day he takes his regularly scheduled BP and then he goes out to LF to the batting cages and he brings someone to throw live BP. He'll routinely spend another 45 minutes hitting. He takes almost no breaks during the time. He might readjust his feet in between pitches but that's it. If they take a break, it is for the BP pitcher, but honestly, I don't remember any breaks. Why would I worry about a guy like this? He's in his mid -30's, spring training is too long, and he is always prepared to play. The f***in press should find something else to write about.

I've gotta agree with a700hitter. Manny does put out a lot of effort for being an older guy. He's a great hitter and is always on the ball. I've never been to Spring Training personally, but from what I've read, and heard from people that went, Manny really does put out more than his fair share of a work out.

Can we change the thread title to "Manny is arriving on the date he is required"?

Under the CBA Manny has to be there by March 1. He is going to be there on March 1. So because he doesn't show up for the voluntary date then he's arriving late? People need to get a grip.

agreed with jacksonian and superManny

just because he isnt showing up early the media has to make a story of it and ride it out.

this is why manny is very fond of boston, the media crapshoots the poor guy. As long as he puts up the numbers he does, im only worried about him being at his job for 162+ days

i agree part way, this year i dont mind that he not showing up late because of family issues but last year he showed up late because he was mad... come on now, hes not different then anyone else on the team but it sure seems like it, u dont see Ortiz or anyone else thinking ther better than anyone else... but this year Manny has a reason to be late, get well soon Mannys mom, and come to camp ready to play Manny...

hey we wouldn't be gaining anything if we traded Manny and signed Arod, they both can hit sure but they can't field... and they both have similar contracts($20+mil)... BUT we could put Wily Mo in left... haha...

sign AROD??????

let me just shoot myself

Sign arguably the best player in the game ( at least the best SS/3B ) and shoot yourself? Jesus, I guess you root for the name on the back of the jersey a little more than the front, eh?

These players aren't your friends. You don't know them. They have no impact on your personal life other than playing for the team you root for. If A-Rod ever signed with the Red Sox, you should go sprinting to release energy from being so pumped up.

Signing A-Rod would be like signing Damon, sure I like Damon for what he did on his time with the Sox but he betraded the Red Sox fans when he said he would never go to the Yankees, YET he did... A-Rod said he doesnt like Boston so f*** him, hes a great player, but I dont want him, actually when he was on Seattle/Texas he was my favorite but he wnet to the Yankees, that makes him the enemy, I am a Red Sox fan, Sox fans dont like Yankees, simple as that, and im not saying I dont have respect for the Yankees, because I do...

I'm guessing Tgov and Animal are friends somehow or another.

They probably ride the bus together.

(Now, I won't make any reference to how long or short the bus is because that would be a cheap shot. ;) )
