good point.

but to me Tek didn't look to magical handling pitchers last year...I know the staff was at times decimated by injury, but even so, I did not come away from the '06 campaign feeling like Tek was all he'd been made out be in the prior 2 yrs in terms of handling the staff.

Will it even matter? i read on SOSH that Daisuke picks his pitches and won't let a catcher do anything but catch. Is that true? if so you think he will change his ways?

If it comes down to it, Varitek is going to be the deciding factor, I doubt they would him call his own shots having not faced any hitters in the league before

Matsuzaka is going to rock, for a number of reasons. Really, I think that coming into Boston is one of the best situations for him. Big stage, which he seems to like and has excelled on at a number of levels before. Not a gimmick pitcher, but rather a smart guy with multiple big-league caliber pitches. And the x-factor, he's a smart pitcher who is coming into a rotation with a pair of almost OCD level preparation guys in Tek and Schilling. Tek's reputation as a good game caller has almost as much to do with his preparation and scouting as it does with his in-game calls and adjustments. Seeing around 18 wins and a 3.4-3.8 ERA isn't unrealistic.

I thought otherwise, because usually Japanese pitchers will just let their catchers call games entirely for them. I fnot, then I think Daisuke will be forced to let Tek call his games until he gets a handle on the hitters.

It is fun to read some of these predictions.

Nay-Sayers please stand up.

Dude is an absolute stud.

The last few starts it looked like what Matsuzaka usually looks like. He's not pitching out of his mind, he's doing what he has done his whole life. He is simply baffling guys.

I was actually thinking the same thing today. Many people were projecting a ceiling of 13 wins with a 4 something ERA. I think the most popular was 13-14 wins and 8-9 losses. Hes been much better, and he could be even better with some more run support.

castigs' date=' the pen can change and with bullpen guys you are talking about high end stakes. I have already digested, broken down, spit out my projections on the sox pen. It would take a miraculous turnaround and someone to excel past recent trends to make the pen reliable, let alone good.[/quote']

Pedroia is a bellow average ML hitter, and he is not great in the field. Everytime Cora plays positive things happen. He was a very productive player when he played everyday. Face it Crespo Pedroia stinks.

I was just joking around, I know it wasn't funny, and about Pedroia I couldn't have been more wrong, obviously. Anything eles you want me to say?

Edit- That comment about Pedroia and Cora was completly absurd, however I wasn't the only one in the world who didn't believe in Pedroia after watching him consistently for his first 2 months. I am glad we were wrong and you guys were right.

Haha I pretty much figured, I think it's actually funny how dead wrong I was about Pedroia. I still think Manny is going to hit 35 HRS though :D

If I recall correctly, you also were ecstatic with the Drew and Lugo signings.

Matsukaza has been good, but not lights out.

When you include all three players, I'd say the nay-sayers have been better with their predictions than you.

Find a place where I was ecstatic with the Drew and Lugo signings. I didn't poo-poo them right away, but ecstatic? Ha! I thought both would produce about to their career averages. Who would be ecstatic about gettnig a guy who has an injury history and is the 3rd highest paid player on the team? I could be happy with the signing, because he was supposed to be an upgrade over Trot (I argue that by the end of the year he will have endeared himself to Sox fans more than he has so far), but ecstatic is how I felt when the Sox got Matsuzaka.

You're right, Matsuzaka has been good, but not lights out. He's only stayed healthy, is in the top 10 in wins, and top 5 in K's. If you want to declare that he isn't "lights out" now, go ahead. He's 3 months into a 6 year contract.

I guess the nay-sayers have been right more often than I have. Of course, your blanket representation of the nay-sayers covers everyone, so it is a little hard to say they have been right more than I have. I supported Lugo and Drew (meh, jury's still out), Matsuzaka (I supported him big time), Pedroia (I supported him big time), Youkilis (same, while others were saying he just wasn't a very good hitter) and Crisp (who I supported throughout his struggles).

Everyone nay-says a little bit, but it is worth being aware of the fact that there are differences. A lot of people here like to nay-say EVERYTHING this FO does. I'm not one of them.
