I think the signing can be viewed on how much they spend on him. I am reading one yr contract which sounds more than minor league contract, which is what I would have expected on this.

The sox are very right handed. Their nemesis in NY has Damon, Abreu, Giambi, Matsui, Cano and potentially Mientkiewicz in their starting lineup. Then you have Posada who has a little less pop from the right handed side as opposed to the left.

The one thing he gave last yr was that he held lefties to a .202 BAA and a .600OPS. The problem being that he faced 15% more righties than he faced lefties, and righties lambasted him to a tune of a Manny-esqe OPS (1.029). The funny thing is, 2 yrs ago, those roles were reversed, as he dominated righties and was owned by lefties.

Overall, this move depends on how much and what role he will occupy. If they want to use him like the yankees used Villone (set up man), then this is a VERY BAD MOVE. If they are going to try Okajima as a potential set-up man or at least a 1-2 inning reliever and exclusively use Romera as a lefty only pitcher, then this is a good move.

Red Sox signed LHP J.C. Romero, who had been with the Angels, to a one-year contract.

The Boston bullpen is certainly getting more crowded. Whether it's really any better is still to be determined. Romero joins Mike Timlin, Julian Tavarez, Hideki Okajima and Brendan Donnelly as apparent locks to make the team. Manny Delcarmen should have a big edge for one of the remaining two openings, leaving Kyle Snyder, Craig Hansen, Craig Breslow, Javier Lopez, Devern Hansack, Lenny DiNardo, Kason Gabbard and Rule 5 pick Nick DeBarr fighting for what would seem to be one job. And since the Red Sox are still hunting for a closer, there might not be room for any of those guys. Frankly, we're not sure Romero is a better bet than Breslow in a specialist role. He held left-handers to a .202 average for the Angels last season, but he still finished with a 6.71 ERA and a 31/28 K/BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings. Even when he's effective, he's a terribly frustrating pitcher.

I don't mind this signing. I'm absolutely shocked he's still only 30 years old. I always thought he was like 36.

If you listen to that Theo interview from today, his philosophy on bullpens/relievers is to try and pick them up after a bad year. Sounds funny, but the logic is to get these guys for rebound years and not pay a lot for a guy who had a good year last year.

So based on that logic, watch Seanez have 30 saves this year...

I'm thinking Romero will have a Mike Myers-ish role with the team with Okajima being relied on to produce more than 1 out per outing. I see Timlin/Donnelly handling set-up duties for, I'm hoping, Mike Gonzalez

Yeah, gotta say, he probably isn't any better than breslow. I think if used in certain situations he could be effective but the same can be said about Breslow. Personally, I'd rather see Nick Debarr make this team than JC Romero. I'd like to hope that just because he has played at the ML level doesn't mean he gets the job or even an edge. He should be on a try out basis.

Im in with the "against Romero acquisition" group. He would be best served as a lefty only type of pitcher, but Id rather see the in-house candidates of Craig Breslow or Javier Lopez take on that job. Javier Lopez's K of Jim Thome with the bases loaded was pretty slick. Im getting that same feeling in the pit of my stomach when I heard about Rudy Seanez being signed. Hopefully there's a clause in his contract that can allow them to release him if they arent being shown anything during ST

How can we be against acquiring a guy when our only philosophy is "Let's try Javier Lopez or Craig Breslow"? I mean, we can still try those guys, we didn't lose them to get Romero. Depth, its all about depth. Seanez was too, and I bet the FO would do the same move again if it were presented to them. Veteran relievers, just throw them in. Do everything you can to get other shut-down type guys, but you gotta have guys like Romero. He's also a lefty.

This is a neutral deal if anything.

The Sox would consider signing Seanez for the 3rd time? Thanks I just threw up a little. I'll give him a chance to see what he's got but as of now this isnt that much of an imapct signing. And Yes I have realized he is left-handed

theo is lying. His theory is to pick them up after a bad yr? Foulke' date=' Embree, Tavares, Seanez, Timlin etc. were all coming off solid yrs when he got them.[/quote']

I believe he was talking about going foward since the market is so crazy right now. It actually seems like it might be a good idea since RP are so inconsistant from year to year. Basically rolling the dice and hoping that they have a good year the year you sign them. RP is different from closer though as I don't think the Sox are going to go after a closer coming off a bad year.

Anyone think there stock pilling some arms in the pen because some of the younger guys might be heading somewhere else for a closer?

Don't expect Gonzalez either, looks like NYY has the advantage at this point, dealin Melky straight up.

The key in the signing of J.C. Romero its how much it cost to sign him, its well known that he had a bad year in 2006, but according to what i have been hearing it was mainly because of mechanic issues in his delivery not because of health issues or lack of stuff. Romero had good years with the Twins, so if they can fix those problems they may have something there. In addition the Sox are going to carry to LH in the pen this yearOkahima is going to be one of them but Lopez or Breslow are very average.

That could be a BAD trade for NY. I dont like the idea of moving Melky, I just have a feeling the yankees will be trying to reaquire him in 5 yrs when he is a FA for insane $$$. But Gonzalez is a good reliever when he is healthy and he is young.

I was just VERY against giving up Proctor too, as he is the lynchpin of the middle relief and dealing him for a lefty power reliever who cannot stay healthy doesnt scream lynchpin to me. Although, if the yankees acquire Gonzalez, expect Frns to be dealt for about 50 cents on the dollar.
