Boston.com reports the Sox are looking at Gagne, are talking to Lugo's reps, and that the JD Drew deal is a few minor language issues and a physical away. Also we've inquired to teh Pirates about Somlom Torres and Gonzalez

MLB.com has a different team involved with the Nats

The Angels could be involved in a three-way deal with the Nationals and Red Sox with Manny Ramirez going to the Angels. The Nationals and Red Sox would love to have Ervin Santana, who was 16-8 with a 4.28 ERA last season, but the Angels are loathe to part with the right-hander. Seattle is another possible destination for Ramirez, though those talks apparently never really got off the ground.

I think once again....Manny Ramirez will be on the Red Sox.....thats not a bad thing.

Right now I could see the Red Sox getting Julio Lugo, JD Drew, and Eric Gagne but what makes me nervous is Daisuke Matsuzaka. The time on the clock is winding down and I hope they have a good plan in place.

Other than that....having Jon Lester back is huge and gives us that extra starter incase of an emergency. If the Sox can get Matsuzaka under contract.....we have the luxury of allowing Lester to start in AAA and continue to work on his control problems.

RE: Matsuzaka.

I head this today and it seems like the most sense to me. Matsuzaka is not going back to Japan. He has expressed his feelings on this time and time again. However, he has no reason to agree to a deal until the last few days (the 11th hour) because there's no reason to commit to anything until then. He can't really say no, but until he has to, he doesn't have to say yes.

I also think if negotiations were going badly the Sox would not be focusing so much on Manny Ramirez.

Wow, the Sox falter to a 3rd place finish... then in the offseason acquire the likes of JD Drew, Julio Lugo, lefty Hideki Okajima, with Matsuzaka in sight, Eric Gagne close to signing, possible trade for Brendan Donnelly:blink:

As questionable as some of the signings are, kudos to the FO for opening the damn wallet this offseason.

Good role players, but nothing core. The Drew signing is getting mutilated on ESPN. 14 mil for a guy who may or may not play every other season is way too much.

that is the one thing that the sox FO should get credit for. Oh, and for becoming the yankees, like they said they were not 4 months ago/

blah blah blah

The way the market is this offseason, the Sox would have gotten killed if they didn't spend the money.

Oh, and even with the signings, this places them a cool 60 mil behind the Yankee$.

The yankees currently sit in the 180-190 range. The sox, as is will be in the 150-160 range.

Look at the numbers.

We're inching closer....about $50 mill short.

The last time Drew has had real health concerns was back in 2003. 2 out of the last 3 seasons of at least played at least 145 games. 2005 missed time due to an injury prone weakness of being hit by a pitch

And Matsuzka is just a role player?

Didn't you hear? Jacksonian's scouts only project him as a 3, but he's still going to get ace money!!!!@!22!!!@!!111

Thats the way every Yankee fan wants to spin it. Its hard to think a guy who throws 93-97 with Nasty breaking stuff on projects to a 3rd starter.

Steve Phillips on ESPN.com

There's no truth to the rumor that had the Red Sox sending outfielder Wily Mo Pena to the Nationals for closer Chad Cordero.

He will get ace money because there are people who think he will be a 1. And Boras knows this.

FOR THE LAST TIME.

HE WILL GET SLIGHTLY LESS THAN ACE MONEY BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK HE COULD BE BUT HASN'T PROVEN IT YET.

MATSUZAKA DOES NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO JAPAN.

IT WILL BE A FAILURE ON MATSUZAKA'S, BORAS'S, AND THE RED SOX IF HE IS NOT SIGNED.

THE PRICE HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN UP.

HE WILL MAKE ABOUT 11-12 MILLION/YR.

LOL! Go get 'em Jacksonian!

I think the Sox fans are realizing that if this all doesn't pan out for them, they have effectively hamstrung themselves for the next 4 years. Drew and Lugo for $100 million? LOL!

Expect to see half of the players signed this winter to be dangled at the trade deadline this year or next.

Yeah isn't is so funny when teams make s***** signings? Its a good thing youre the immune Yankees.

Wake up, idiot.

If I'm an idiot, then you are completely f***ing clueless, and a moron to boot. The difference right now seems to be this. No one knew Pavano would turn into a ghost, or Giambi would fall off like he did. At the time, everyone thought Pavano was an up and coming star, and Giambi was HOF material [go back and look at his numbers up until 2001].

Pretty much everyone knows that the signings of Drew and Lugo were bad financial deals at the time they were made.

The Yankees aren't immune. Igawa was a waste of money, fine. The Sox are going to be in the hole for about $200 million for three players.

All I'm saying is that if the Sox don't live up to expectations, and/or these guys bomb, the lights in Fenway will be dim for at least three or four years while you guys try to figure a way out of it.

Of course...winning cures all ills...so the story is to be written...but boy, is your FO taking a huge chance.

I think we need both of these ******* problem causers (Gom and Jacksonian) to learn what this board is for

Showing that 98% of the posters on this board are pretty much representative of your pathetic team's futility for the last 90 odd years?

Sorry your panties are in a bunch when we point out the obvious and it doesn't jell with your fantasy dreaming of your beloved bunch of losers.

I've met about 4 or 5 posters here who although they disagree with me, understand baseball, and are respectful, and like debating the Sox moves [as well as the Yankees]. Those people are priceless. They are fun, intelligent, and the only thing wrong with them in my eyes is that they root for the wrong team.

You are not one of those people. Now run along.

The difference btwn the sox and yanks are that the sox sign young players that are ready to hit their peek, the yanks are famous for signing talent that is declining in talent [johnson, damon].
