Maybe the one thing we have not thought about is the most realistc possibility. A lineup of:

Youk

Pedroia

Ortiz

Manny

Drew

is not bad, but we need to worry about:

1. if Lowell is good to start, or if we are looking for a corner infielder

2. Who is playing SS

3. Who is the closer

Posted
I was thinking that myself, that if we kept Manny, we have a pretty good lineup. I mean we're talkin two 40+ HR guys with a 30 HR guy right behind them. Then add in a solid VTek, Lowell form last season, and a decent SS, we have a solid lineup.

Lugo (dont know where else he would end up except for maybe Chicago or the mets)

Youk

Oritz

Manny

Drew

Willy Mo

Lowell

Varitek

Pedroia

Hinske

Barajas???

P Wilson???

Cora

Schilling

Matsuzaka

Papelbon

Beckett

Wakefield

Tavarez

Okajima

Timlin

Delcarmen

Hansen

Borowski???

???? (Trade Crisp+ for someone or MAYBE sign Gagne if their are no other options)

Can we please avoid having Lugo hit leadoff? Youk or Coco would be much better.

Coco's carrer OBP--.329 last year it was.317

Lugo's career OBP--.340 last year it was .341 (it was .373 with TB)

Crisp is like Juan Pierre minus the speed. Has awful AB's, has some speed but not incredibly fast and just doesnt look good swinging the bat. Plus Lugo's more of a SB threat than Crisp

I would be pissed if this guy was playing over WMP come opening day.

Youk can lead off, but have Lugo bat 2nd then

Crisp is like Juan Pierre?

IsoP (last 3 years)

          '04 '05 '06
Pierre .081 .078 .096
Crisp .149 .165 .121

Crisp has much better power. And, as is widely known, Crisp never recovered from his hand injury. He deserves another look after an offseason of surgery and rehab.

Posted

Crisp has more power which isnt that important to being a top of the order guy.

OBP is the most important factor and speed helps to.

Crisps career OBP--.329

Pierres career OBP--.330

both those number are sad for a top of the lineup hitter, but Pierre has alot more speed than Crisp so that helps a little

Does there honestly need to be another thread about this. We already have like 6 of them.

This thread was meant to induce chat about offseason moves assuming Manny is not traded. Therefore thinking of other means of accomplishing goals of getting a close and shortstop.

thank god' date=' thats a good idea, IMO, that will give us a very nice lineup, at elast a betetr 5 hitter than we've had in a while.[/quote']

According to that article we'll be in the same place we were last year since it says its Manny OR Drew that will be in the lineup, unless im reading that wrong...

Ugh...wasn't one of the reasons we sucked last year because we didn't have a serviceable 5 hitter? WMP could do it I guess, but JD Drew would be nice. I'd rather have 14 mil more in payroll and make the playoffs than 14 less and don't.

Whye does everyone keep going on by comparing JD Drew to Manny?

JD Drew will be Trot's replacement in right field, not Mannys. Drew over Trot is a definite upgrade. Now it would seem evident that Wily Mo would take over left field (unless Manny trade brings an outfielder a la Matt Kemp?)

Why? Open the eyes my friend. Manny's worth is higher than ever and this offseason the pile of dogshit being shoveled into the morning papers i getting higher and higher. Correlation: The Red Sox are moving him. And the guy they are asking for do not look like much in the way of 2007 production. They asked the Guardians for Trevor Crowe, Fausto Carmona and Adam Miller. All 3 are top 100 prospects, but neither are likely to be of big help this season. If the sox go for a bundle of prospects, then Drew is essentially the replacement of Manny.

Also an interview with Gabe Kapler saying he intends to come back to Boston next year... yea how about that guys?
I hope that it would only be as the Clubhouse Boy.

I compare him to Manny because If hes moved and Drew is signed then Drew will most likely become the number 5 hitter, and their offensive caliber is just not comparible.

In the long run it may be a good move depending on who they can get for him but thinking of next year it doesnt look good at all

I think it would be a big mistake if we traded Manny and put Drew in the #4 spot or if we kept Manny and didn't sign drew. It's obvious that we need a stronger lineup. Drew is the perfect fit. Hes expensive, but if they are smart, they realize the market is getting expensive and it you have to pay for tallent. Spend the money, damnit.

I like that you do this Beckett, it's a fun exercise. The biggest fear in this lineup to me is the same one we saw hit us in 2006: injury. Manny is likely to miss time. Drew is likely to miss time. Wilson is done and Hinske can't hit lefties so that's kind of a scary situation there if they both go down. With that in mind I just don't see them giving up on Crisp just yet, at least not for a kid who's got just one season setting up in the NL under his belt (in spite of pretty good peripherals and a good pitcher's body -not knocking Capps). I think we'd need more back.

Crisp to Colorado for Ubaldo Jimenez and Ryan Spilborghs might kill two birds with one stone. Jimenez has great upside but an injury history that might allow them to trade him, and Spilborghs right now appears to be an untested Crisp - better than his tools, good bat, good corner OF/middling CF guy - without the speed (which the Sox ignore). I mean, as long as we're throwing stuff against the wall, I'll play :)

i think they have to trade Crisp before he loses more value.

I just cant see him having sucess in Boston. He's more of a small market player

What about Crisp+ to OAK for Ducheser/Calero and Kielty??

9 mil for Lugo. 14 mil for Drew. No bullpen in sight. Manny in the fold. The O is shaping up, not quite the murderer's row of 2003-2005, but something that should work. The rotation needs to finalize with Matsuzaka and the pen is out right now. How high will the payroll rise to? Anyone knows.
