Certainly wasnt expecting this. Cubs are all out this offseason. With Lee expected to sign with hometown Astros' date=' expect teams to start calling Boston about Manny[/quote']If they were to trade Manny, they'd need to replace him with a big bat. With Soriano and Aramis Ramirez off the market, there are very few big bats available to replace him.

Which big bats are available next offseason? Who is available via trade?

I think 8 years at 17 million is absurd. Not because 17 million is too much to pay Alfonso, but because EIGHT YEARS?!?? that's a very long contract for someone who relies on speed and not on OBP.

They can always trade him after 4 or 5 years and eat some money. If he has a catastrophic injury, I am sure the contract is insured. Length of contract doesn't bother me that much with a consistent performer like Soriano. If they get 3 or 4 good years out of him before he declines, it's not the worse thing, unless he falls off the proverbial cliff.

Manny might actually be a bargin with only 2 or 3 years left on his deal.

This is absolutely the case. The Sox probably have their best bargaining position on Manny in the past 3 years (since the A-Rod deal). I don't think that Sox fans will like the immediate results of a Manny deal (not enough in return) but I think a year from now (if not sooner) there will be a player or two that has taken his place and this team will be faster and better in the field overall.

NAme me a hitter other than Pujols who is tied up by the Cardinals that could possibly replace Manny. I think you may be overlooking his place in the history of this game. It would take two good hitters to replace what Manny means to the Red Sox lineup.

I'm sorry but Manny will be staying. His bat is too far important and compared what Soriano is making Manny looks like a bargain. Soriano for 8 years is a waste.

Exactly, why would we get rid of Manny at the point he has become a financial bargain. You trade a player of Manny's caliber if you are looking to rebuild. With a rotation of Beckett, Matuszaka, Schilling, Papelbon and possibly Clemens, you are looking at a stacked team that needs to shore up it's bullpen and get one more bat to make a sreious run. Trading Manny would disembowel the team for a couple of years.

Manny stays, the Cubs will continue to lose, look for Soriano playing at homer friendly Wrigley hit over 60 HR's next year. Yea Boy.

I think it's a case of do you want $.75 on the $1 for him right now or nothing when he signs somewhere else after '08. Don't get me wrong, he is pretty much irreplacable in the lineup. But his stock is as high as it's going to be right now with 2 years, $17mill per on his contract and the only two really big free agent bats looking all but signed. I don't want to move him, really, but if they are going to now is the time to get something done.

I can't see trading Manny until they have first locked up another big bat or two. Losing Manny and not replacing him this year would result in anothe rthird place finish. I don't think that's where they want to end up after having committed possibly $90 million to Matsuzaka.

The only problem I see there is that there are a lot of big free agent bats next year. Andruw Jones, Wells, Kent, Pudge, Abreu, Dye. It's a much deeper class than this year's. I suppose they could trade him and make a run at one of these guys, but I think they will find fewer willing partners.

We have him for 3 more prime years. When he is done with us, he likely will be on the decline. So, if he walks after 8 great years with us, I'd have no complaints. By trading him now, You would be sacrificing three prime years of a HOF hitter. I don't agree.

is that 51 going towards the cap?????

Soriano will be 39 when his contract's up, thats jsut ridiculous to hope he is still a good player by then

Do you realize we spent 51 million just to talk to the guy in your AV. I will 100% without a doubt gaureentee that he will never be worth that money.

How many WS titles would it take for you to take that back?

Don't jump down my throat' date=' but I really don't think Manny wants to be in Boston anymore.[/quote']

Just a Yankee fan that gets down on his knees at nights and prays that the sox trade Manny.
