Free agent Alex Gonzalez reportedly has a three-year, $15 million offer on the table, likely from either the White Sox or the Reds.

The Blue Jays have also been talking to Gonzalez, but they didn't make the offer. If Gonzalez can get this kind of deal, Julio Lugo at four years and $32 million would look very attractive. Of course, if it's the White Sox that sign Gonzalez, the same teams that are considering Gonzalez right now would likely covet Juan Uribe. Uribe is about as good defensively and has more offensive potential. Should the Reds get Gonzalez, Brandon Phillips would stay at second base. It'd make the decision to re-sign Juan Castro look awfully redundant.

Salute!

umm he hasnt been signed yet

How do you know the Sox won't match the offer?

I hope they don't because we automatically get a draft pick while they overpay for him. Draft picks please

Who else is available other than Lugo? Also, I thought the draft pick thing has been eliminated under the new CBA.

Draft pick compensation has not been eliminated for this year.

If Gonzalez is gone they will get Lugo.

If it comes down to overpaying for one of the two (9m vs 14m), which is more important: Drew or Lugo?

They better address this with Lugo' date=' quickly, or it's looking a lot like last year's CF/leadoff debacle. That definitely means overpaying.[/quote']Exactly, I'd rather give Gonzo 3years/$15 million than to lose him and lugo and have a gaping hole

at SS. A draft pick and a hack at SS will result in a number unnecessary losses in '07.

I usually don't agree with you on things like this but here's an obvious place to agree.

I really think this explains why the Sox have been talking about Lugo for quite awhile: they knew that he was going to be one of the only SS's available after letting go of Hanley Ramirez. They'll likely overpay to secure him (again, possibly blowing other teams--Toronto--out of the water) and not have to worry about SS for a few years.

Plus if they sign someone for three years, they don't have to keep him for 3 year. he could always be traded one or two years in to the contract.

Gonzo is a type B player' date=' right?[/quote']

bump. I'd really like to know his status. If he is a type A then letting him go and getting lugo would net the sox out one sandwich pick. If he is a type B, then the sox would get a 2nd round sandwich pick and lose their first rounder. Big difference.

He's a B. I don't think compensation is going to be as big an issue this year for them. They had very strong and deep drafts the last two years and they had a very good IFA class this year. Having the lower minors as stocked as it is gives them a fallback position in a year where they want to add talent to the big club.

compensation should always be an issue, especially when the sox lack upper level FA talent. A lot of those golden gooses if you will, will not turn out. Having a ton of low level talent may develop into an upper level talent who may develop into a solid MLB player. Until you have enough who are ready to start pluggin holes, you should never stop considering your draft status.

How about letting Cora play SS this year and see what turns up next year?

BTW, anyone when is Orlando Cabrera's contract up?

No. Cora can not start this year. It looks like we are going to s*** cash this year so we need to have the best team possible.

But that means we'll likely be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overpaying for Lugo ... I'd rather have a good SS for a little more money ... then a waaaaay overpriced s***** SS and a draft pick.

If Cora is our starting SS we might as well mail the year in.

I don't think we could find a bigger hole to throw in our lineup than Cora's miserable .220 or so average, no power, and very little speed.

In a market where Frank Thomas can get $9 mil/year, and Jamie Walker can get $4mil/yr, I think paying Lugo between 9-10 million isn't that bad.

edit - Then again I haven't seen what he's been asking for. The last deal I ehard was 4 yrs and somewhere b/t 36-40 mil.

Lugo is not worth it. 10 mil a yr for a guy who is on the wrong end of 31 and his speed is his best asset. That is not a good thing.

Then what do you suggest? Resign AGon, plug Cora there, trade...?

Alex Gonzalez is believed to be close to signing a three-year contract with the Reds, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

It sounds like Rosenthal is just going off Thursday's Boston Globe report, but with the added knowledge that the White Sox aren't currently in the running for Gonzalez. The Globe reported that Gonzalez had a three-year, $15 million offer on the table, likely from the Reds or the White Sox. If the Reds sign him, they'll have perhaps the best middle-infield defense in the NL. However, it'll be another blow to an offense that GM Wayne Krivsky has taken a lot away from since his July deal with the Nationals.

I suggest throwing that money into the place that will cost the sox their 2007 season. They can putz around all they want with their SS and their RF and whomever. That bullpen will be their death. Resign AGon, and use the extra $$ to get Speier or nab a good closer via trade.
