  1. 1. What to do with Tavarez?

    • Don't resign him
    • Resign him and give him a shot at the starter spot in ST
    • Resign him and put him in the pen

I would give him a shot in ST and ultimately give him the long relief job along with Snyder. When a starter gets injured, he wouldbe the main fill in.

I remember at the beginning of the year, people went on about wanting to DFA him. Now, granted its the royals, he's not having a bad day and some people are saying they should resign him.

You can smell the irony....

I thought he was a bad signing, but not as bad as Seanez who I considered to be a waste. Tavarez was in the running for the DFA contest for a while with Seanez especially after that game where he blew up and almost threw away a game only to be saved by a play at the plate for the final out. He has earned some kudos taking the ball as a starter when everyone elese was crapping out in that role.

I was at that game. I almost put my fist through my seat (we were all standing up, if you were wondering how that worked).

Well, it's him or Snyder for the long man/#5 spot. I like his s*** more that Snyder's. Who knows, maybe he's found his calling as a starter? But really, it's the long man or #5 starter we're talking about, so who really cares? It's a loser's spot so both Snyder and Tavarez are qualified.

Then don't choose resign him. My B. I guess where should he be next year is the real question.

He is not a free agent. He signed a 2 year deal with the red sox.

I think it would be a very hard sell to consider Tavarez' stock as high, and trying to deal him as a legitimate starter. He has never pitched more than 161 innings in a single season. You can put BBDOC in a g-string and call him a dancer but I don't think you will get anyone wanting a lap dance.

trade him??

why and for who??

is their another 5th outfielder out there??

is our pitching so deep that we can deal anyone who has the slighest bit of success??

kc hung 20 runs on our asses friday and saturday nite and you want to trade pitchers now??

i would think we'd keep him and give the ball as a starter and use him like the yanks used ramiro mendoza

You mean let him go to the Yanks and pitch in an undercover fashion for us? GREAT plan. The Yanks like picking up players off of the Boston scrap heap anyway.

Tavarez as a starter: 4.91ERA, 1.43WHIP

Tavarez as a reliever: 4.71ERA, 1.60WHIP

Other than the fantastic groundball/flyball rate as a starter (29 to 2), his numbers when out of the pen aren't significantly different than when hes a starter, and outside of the one start against Chicago the numbers are a lot worse. If hes really good for the rest of the month then they should let him fight for the 5th starter spot in ST, otherwise he should be kept in the pen as the longman or emergency 6th starter.

And with only a 615 game difference between his number of career starts and his overall appearances this is a valid stat?

you dont show inherited runners allowed to score as a reliever

his efforts as a starter have been very uplifting as compared to his relieving role

this is a case where #s lie

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this headcase as a starter for the Red Sox in 07, I expect he wouldn't make it out of May 07 without doing something stupid to get himself suspended.

Probably not. But the stats I put up weren't his career numbers so that isn't an issue, unless you think that a 52 game difference between starts and apperances isn't good enough. This season Tavarez the reliever hasn't been all that different than Tavarez the starter. Allowing 50% (18 of 36) of inherited runners to score isn't good, but its also not terrible considering the rest of the pen.

One good start and two mediocre ones really isn't enough sample size to call him uplifting as a starter.

the thing about tavarez is that as a starter he keeps the team in the game...there is a little more room for error as a starter. He can give up 3 runs in 6 innings, but as a reliever he gives up 2 runs in the 7th and blows the lead etc. I'd like to see him as a long man and possible 5th starter if he shines in ST or when someone gets hurt
