Jonathan Papelbon told reporters that he'll have an MRI on his injured shoulder on Monday and could return in five to seven days.

Sox manager Terry Francona said in his pre-game meeting with the media that Papelbon came in this morning and said he felt a little stiff, but not particularly tender. Even if Papelbon can return before the end of next week, the Red Sox should be very careful with him the rest of the year. That might mean no work on back-to-back days. Keith Foulke looks like the best choice to close while Papelbon is out.

This is not good.

It isn't the end of the world. He has been the only pitcher in our bullpen consistently getting outs. For him to be tired is no surprise. Same thing with Rivera, elbow strain and he is still pitching. I really wouldn't mind them closing up shop and just shutting him down until next season if they have to. I know thats depressing and its really waving the white flag but whats the point in risking the health of his shoulder for this, you know?

Rivera never clutched his arm in pain after one pitch. Rivera was just sore and he shut it down. Papelbon's injury really worries me for a tear either in the labrum or in the cuff.

I wasn't saying Rivera and Papelbon have the same injury. I was saying same scenario, only pitcher in the bullpen throwing quality innings, got tired. Thats all it is fatigue. So maybe to you the sky is falling, but the kid is fatigued.

We had an interesting thread during Spring Training about how many innings Papelbon should throw this year. Of course, that's when we thought he would be a starter. A lot of people felt that he could handle a load of 200+ innings. Going up to that level of innings for a kid that has never been near that number of innings always carries the risk of breakdown. This kid is so intense that he wouldn't let up when he was hitting the wall. They've been monitoring him closely in the closers role, but his intensity plus the fact that ML innings are much different than innings at any other level resulted in him being overworked. When he gets older and more established, he'll get to know his limits better and he'll be better able to read the signals that his body gives him. Hopefully, the next time he starts to feel that fatigue he'll recognize it sooner and he'll shut it down for a couple of days before he gets injured.

The MRI will tell us.
