Phillies acquired LHP Jamie Moyer and cash from the Mariners for RHP Andrew Baldwin and RHP Andrew Barb.

The 43-year-old Moyer waived his no-trade rights to go to a team that's in better position to contend than the Mariners, but there should have been better situations out there for him than Philadelphia. A flyball pitcher, he's had big troubles surviving outside of Safeco Field the last two seasons. The league switch will help, but he's just going to be a fourth starter for the Phillies. The Mariners might put Joel Pineiro back in the rotation now. The alternative would be to call up Cha Seung Baek. Aug. 19 - 11:48 pm et

i guess we'll just have to use Gabbard as our 5th starter??? :dunno:

Hinske and Pena are good pick-ups, but they aren't pitchers.

The Sox could have used a guy like Moyer. Hell, anybody is better than their current options at the 5th SP spot. Maybe they've given up on the season at this point. They're sure playing like they have.

Wakefield is coming back on the 27th, they just need a stop gap starter for 1 game. No need now to get a 5th starter

2 different situations

Pena was picked up in March as a platoon with Trot for this year and then to become the future right fielder. Also at that time, the rotation was actually healthy

Hinske was picked up just now to help solidify the bench, a strong lefty bat who can play across the field just about. This move also ensures Trot could be wearing a new uniform. Both of these moves werent made as rentals for this season

Yeah, Moyer is better off in the NL. I don't think he'd really be a great addition to the Sox. He is 43, throws about 43 mph and has an ERA just south of 5. Nice move by the Phills, who have a good shot at making the playoffs. He probably can be an ace in the NL.

Not in Philly's ballpark will he be an ace. He is going to get killed there.

He'll still do fine vs. the NL.
