Ken Rosenthal in his weekly baseball report spoke about how Vernon Wells turned down a contract extension, and will probably do so in the offseason. Which I guess would prompt a trade. Rosenthal sees the Rangers & Angels as the 2 most likely places he would go to. That would be a sigh of relief to see him leave the AL East. Especially for Beckett

EDIT: Sorry Mods, I meant to post this in the rumor mill

The only thing that scares me about this is who the Jays could get in return. I hope that it's HUGELY public that Wells doesn't want to stay in Toronto to drive their asking price waaaaay down. I'd have to think the Jays will probably go after pitching in exchange for him, as we've seen that the Jays lineup can produce runs with the likes of Glaus, Rios, Cattalanotto, etc. This just scares me because Wells is an MVP waiting to happen...and a guy like that, if traded, commands a front line starter. Hopefully, with Rosenthal saying he'd go to the Angels, it would be prospects involved rather than MLB-ready players, giving that LAA has a plethora of top-notch guys waiting for their shot. We've seen flashes of Burnett's brilliance this year when he's been healthy, Halladay is brilliant EVERY year when healthy...I don't like the idea of them picking up another solid starter. That's a BIG 3.

Vernon Wells won't be a Yankee because they would demand Phillip Hughes and then some, or major league ready pitching like Chien-Ming Wang His salary is $4.7 million this season, so taking the load off Toronto wouldn't be necessary. Toronto is also not that stupid as to trade him to NY, a division rival. Toronto for the last couple years has gone into the season thinking they can contend, so it would be a very bad idea to trade him to NY. I really don't see Wells being traded, but you never know.

Depending on what the holes on the Sox at that time are... You can't acquire an outfielder when you already have four solid ones like we do now.

Ramirez, Crisp and Pena. Who is the 4th? You find a place for a player of Wells caliber. He's not just good. He's on the verge of greatness. If Pena can't play 1B, you trade Crisp. You get the young stud if you have the chance.

It all depends on how things shake out in a couple years. Let things play out first. But there would be no doubt I would take Wells patrolling centerfield.

Yeah, I mean if Crisp hits .270 from now until then, and we have the budget to fit him in without passing on a pitcher, jump at it. If Crisp gets back to hitting .300 and keeps running when he gets on, his defense isn't as good as wells, but I would stick with Crisp.

...or maybe if Crisp keeps hitting .300 and stealing bases maybe you package him for a starting pitcher and sign V. Wells to play CF.

Well said.

And, to the comment that offense isn't the problem, if you can't stop them from scoring, then it helps to score more than they do.

Also Wells would help the D. He's an elite fielder with a great arm.

Wells is the total package. Great Defense, arm, very good hitter and young. He would be a great #5 hitter in the sox lineup.

Agreed. He is one of the best hitting center fielders in the game. If you had him with Willy Mo Pena and Manny Ramirez then you have the most powerful outfield in the game. The only downfall is they all are right handed (small downfall). The Red Sox would certainly go after him but I can guarantee some team would offer him a better contact.

Outside of the NYY the Red Sox can outbid anyone. The big question is would they though.

If Sox management doesn't want to be outbid, it will not be. They have financial resources second only to the Skanks.

Edgar Renteria, and Jason Varitek are the only free agent players (non pitchers) the new Red Sox management spent big money on. I have a hard time seeing this front office make that kind of move.

For a player that young and good I think they would make an exception.

And with Abreu coming off the books next year, do you think the Yankees would even consider allowing the red sox outbid them? If the Red Sox want a player that good, they will have to overpay, and Theo does not overpay for anyone, hence he will always be a comfortable second on big FAs.

I thought the same thing when Carlos Beltran hit the free agent market. I'm sure anything is possible and I wouldn't expect the Red Sox to become a team that never spends money. Perhaps they would feel Vernon Wells is the type of player to open the wallet. I would hope so because its hard to find a solid defensive CF with power like Wells.

If they're interested, then they could easily outbid anyone with the Yankees already having a projected 2007 OF of Matsui, Damon, and Abreu. If they want to make a run at him, they could outbid any team, seeing that the Yankees probably wouldn't be interested.

If not for the Cubs extending him, the Sox were expected to make a big push for Derrek Lee :(

Wells is not a FA after this season, it is after next season that he is a FA.

I think that is what most of the guys are saying. Move him while they still have the rights, since he's indicated he want sign an extension.

Hate to break it to you guys but Wells most likely will be sticking with the Jays.. he's part of the core that this team has been built around. Glaus was signed to take pressure off Wells by him batting behind him at #5. He's stated he wants to play here and this is also the reason why Ricciardi has traded Schoeneweise and Hinske..to clear more room for a contract extension for wells, catalanotto, and another starter.

Looks like i'm going to eat my own words.. should have waited an extra day before i decided to post my first comment on this thread :P I hope a good starting pitcher and a good fielder comes back in return. Wells is worth it considering he's the complete package aside from the odd slump..but who doesn't go through that?

OK i give up.....

Vernon wells went on TV today in an interview and said the ESPN report about him turning down a contract extension was totally false and that he's never gone to management rrequesting a trade. He says that if the blue jays up the ante a bit, he'd be more than willing to stay...

That's all..i'm done in this thread..dammit
