Has anyone heard anything of a waiver wire deal that will possibly allow the Sox to acquire a starting pitcher better than Jason Johnson. Big Mistake not doing this at the deadline. So anything?

There was nothing we really couldve done til it was too late, I mean the bestw e couldve done was Kip Wells, and Oswalt was only becoming available the day of.

Then this team needs to pick it up FAST!! They are slowly falling away in the division and the Wild Card is slowly slipping away too. I will be very disappointed if they do not make the playoffs

Its not like I dont expect that of them or that Im saying to go easy on them for how theyve been playing, but honestly, who thought theyd be this good this season? I mean I remeber posting that this was a transition year to the future, and theyve given us a pretty exciting season so far.

When you have Manny and Ortiz, Beckett, Schilling, and wake plus a closer like Papelbon you should be in W.S contention, and If Varitek did not go down I bet we would still be tied or ahead of the Yankees.

Granetd we have Schill and the 1-2 in Papi n ManRam. But who saw Papelbon coming? Not sayin I didnt expect this from him, but I thought he'd be just a set-up guy to Foulke, and then Foulke went down. Also, tehre was a lot of concern our offense wouldn't produce, as it isnt now. And we had Youkilis, Lowell, Gonzalez, and Loretta all have good seasons at the plate and with the glove. If maybe 2 of those guys didnt have teh seasons theyre having, we're in contention for 3rd with the Jays.

Nobody can say they expected THIS from Jonathan Papelbon.

3-2, 30 saves, 0.92 ERA. Even if he has a normal closer season from here on out (2 ish ERA but converting most of his saves), he'll have one of the best closer seasons EVER. 40 saves and a mid 1's ERA is as good as it gets for closers.

That having been said, this was considered a down season for the Sox by many outsiders, I don't think many picked them to win the division. That having been said, nobody expected Sheffield, and Matsui to lose this much time. That really made the Yankees vulnerable-- a vulnerability the Red Sox have failed to take advantage of.

As far as I'm concerned the Red Sox are still in the race, and it WILL be a disappointment if they don't make the playoffs especially considering that they were in first place for most of the season and have a SOLID team.

If the Phillies fade I wouldn't be surprised to see Jon Lieber out there on waivers, and the Sox might take a shot on him... but really I don't see many other arms out there worthy of picking up.

It probably won't be until near the end of this month before any more appealing names show up as possibilities. As the waiver restricted trade deadline comes to an end this month more teams will have a better idea if they stand a chance to make a run for the playoffs. That might free up a few more names from teams that still felt they were in contention back in July, or even now in early August.

That being said I still feel that Theo won't deviate from his philosophy or long-term plan and give up any significant prospects to make this happen.

Yeah, they just improved themselves yesterday when David Wells re-appeared into his old self. If he is his old self then its just as good as a trade, if not better since we gave up nothing to get him. It was very encouraging watching him do well, even in his last start he was good for 4 innings. He is getting his arm strength back. Last night was essentially a final spring training tune-up (his fourth start).

Why not take a flyer with LaTroy Hawkins? Some relief in the pen from a veteran who’s got a fair track record in the AL could be the answer. I know he’s nothing special but if the cost is right, why not?

Only reason Johnson is ehre is because he had 2 good starts until today, IMO I feel more confidence in Snyder.

Becket

Schilling

Lester

Wells

Snyder

Thats still better than half of the league in terms of starting pitching, plus when we get Wake back, and if Wells can hold it together, we got ourselves a very good rotation.

Snyder is perfect for being the long man.

Maybe call Pauley up and give him another start?
