Javy Lopez deal reported done, will be announced Friday per eei

This probably deserves its own thread. The other thread deals with questions surrounding the situation, so this thread will be aimed at the move in general, and whether or not it is a solution.

Obviously he is not the Lopez of 2 years ago, but hes still a better stick than Mirabelli, and arguably Vartiek (although neither are hitting very well this year, and Tek has a better OPS and more HR and RBI's, but also has 30 more AB's at this point) he is a significant drop from Teks defense and game calling abilities (Greg Maddux actually refused to work with him).

Thoughts?

Its most likely Stern, Machado or Alvarez thats going to Baltimore in return.

Nick Carfardo is reporting that it will be a player who is currently on the 40-man roster:

Abe Alvarez, Kason Gabbard, David Pauley, Jermaine Van Buren, Alejandro Machado, Brandon Moss, Adam Stern

Along with what you said, the prospects the Sox probably wouldnt mind giving up

EDIT: Jeez I didnt expect this soon to be trade, to be one of the biggest sport stories of the day

Has anyone heard any official announcements letting us know how soon we might see Javy on the field?

I'd offer the O's that list of players in the following order:

Alvarez, Machado, Stern, Moss, Van Buren, Gabbard, Pauley.

I think Van Buren, Gabbard, and Pauley are the only guys who actually have a shot at being Major League ballplayers, and Van Buren only as a middle reliever. With this organization's depth at outfield, they wouldn't miss Stern or Moss. Machado's a solid ballplayer, but he's a utility guy at best IMO.

Red Sox land Lopez

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Javy Lopez is expected to be in uniform tonight for the start of the Sox three-game series with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after the Sox make official their acquisition of the veteran catcher from the Baltimore Orioles, plus cash considerations, for a player to be named later.

The Orioles expect to receive a player from Boston’s 40-man roster, believed to be either switch-hitting outfielder Adam Stern or switch-hitting infielder Alejandro Machado, but those plans could hit a snag.

According to major league sources, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays would likely place a waiver claim on Machado and would consider doing so on Stern, effectively blocking those players from going to Baltimore. As of this afternoon, neither of those players had been placed on waivers by the Red Sox. Any players offered on waivers do not clear for 72 hours, so it is unlikely that the deal will be completed for another week, or more.

While the Devil Rays have legitimate interest in both players, there is another component that could motivate them to place a claim. According to multiple major league sources, the Devil Rays are convinced that the Red Sox made illegal contact with the agent for infielder Julio Lugo before the July 31 trading deadline, while Lugo was still under Tampa Bay's control. The Red Sox allegedly reached out to the agent, Dan Lozano, about whether Lugo would be willing to play second base and whether Lugo, a prospective free agent this winter, would be open to signing an extension. If true, that would constitute tampering, which is not allowed under Major League Baseball rules.

Talks the Devil Rays were conducting with the Sox about possible three-and-four-team trade scenarios involving Lugo essentially dried up once the Rays heard reports of the alleged contact between the Sox and Lozano, though sources say the Devil Rays did not confront either the Sox or the agent with their suspicions. In the absence of proof, the Devil Rays also do not have plans to file a grievance against the Red Sox with the commissioner’s office, those sources say.

This is not the first time trade talks between the Sox and Devil Rays have turned contentious. Talks last winter regarding Lugo coming to Boston in a three-way deal with Atlanta broke down, as did another three-way scenario last July involving Lugo and Aubrey Huff coming to the Sox as part of a three-way deal with the Mets for Manny Ramirez.

Huff has since been traded to the Houston Astros, while Lugo was dealt shortly before the July 31 trading deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who did not make a play for Lugo until there were less than two hours to go before the deadline.

As part of the Lopez trade, the Red Sox are expected to receive in the neighborhood of $1.4 million from the O’s, although that figure could change if the O’s do not get the player they expected to receive.

Its also been noted by Gordon that Ken Huckaby was DFA'd after the game had ended

since when is Stern a switch hitter?

Seems like the Sox are doing a PTBNL so they can get Lopez in uniform ASAP and also so they can trade someone who won't necessarily pass through waivers.

IMO, Stern, Machado, or Alvarez... any one of that trio is worth 2 months of Lopez.

The Sox need to smooth things over with the Rays. Pissing off other teams is not a great way to do business.

If the Rays FO feel that the Sox did something illegal in contacting Lugo’s agent then why don’t they file some kind of grievance with the commish? My guess is that they don’t have enough grounds to make such an allegation. Filing a vindictive claim on Stern because of this is really unprofessional.

Oh, and according to McAdam’s blog, the PTBNL will be Adam Stern.

BOSTON -- Adam Stern will be the player sent to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Javier Lopez, but -- even though the Lopez-to-Boston deal has been finalized and the veteran catcher is in Tampa with the team for tonight's game -- there exists a good chance Stern will not join the Orioles until after the regular season.

I personally really like Stern, but he really has no place in this organization. He's not ready to be a contributer this season and the Red Sox have Dave Murphy and Jacoby Ellsbury who are just as good defensively and both have stronger bats-- and I'm pretty sure both are younger.

I wish him the best of luck in Baltimore.

I'm not scared of the move. Just an offensive upgrade at the C position, but a disasterous defensive downgrade. Complete mess defensively.

Come on....Hes not Mike Piazza or Matt Lecroy.

Javy is obviously a step down from Dougie or Tek, but isnt flat out awful. It will be nice to see what he can do, hopefully being in a pennant race will turn on his fire and ignite the player he was two years ago. I can only imagine how much playing in Baltimore wore him down after playing for all those division winners in ATL.

Wow, not scared of a baseball transaction. You must be 10' tall and bulletproof.

He's no defensive downgrade from Mirabelli, so he's an upgrade overall. Go on, you can admit it.

Although he didn't catch maddux, he did catch some very successful pitchers on that Braves staff.
