Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald and Buster Olney of ESPN are hearing the same thing: that Coco Crisp is available in trade talks. In fact, Crisp was offered to the White Sox for a starting pitcher. The Sox have six of 'em, so it's anybody's guess. Maybe a buy low attempt on the fatigued Mark Buehrle? Nah.

Crisp is hitting just .269/.322/.389 since returning from a broken finger and kidney stones on May 28th. His OBP is not down because he's drawing fewer walks - in fact, his walk rate has remained remarkably steady for years. It's down because Crisp's OBP is normally driven by a .300 average and the hits aren't quite there this season. That's the problem with an OBP reliant on base hits. The culprit may be a reduction in Crisp's contact rate. Normally he puts the bat on the ball 86% of the time but this year he's down to 83%.

Even an average center fielder should post a .335 OBP and .425 SLG, and normally Crisp tops that. He's still just 26. Defensively, Crisp is one of the game's best as a left fielder. In center field, not so much.

The Red Sox seemingly wanted to keep Crisp around, signing him to a three year contract extension in April. However, they did trade Bronson Arroyo after signing him to a contract extension.

I wouldn't mind doing this.He isn't leading off any more and Pena is ready.

I guess it really depends on who we could get in return. Redman, Lidle, etc. are not going to cut it, if we are trading a 26yr old, relatively cheap CF then the return better be pretty dam good.

You're insane. Mark Buehrle is an ace pitcher who throws 200+ innings a season. He has a career 3.75 ERA and he's had 16 wins in 4 seasons....plus he is only 27 years old.

Gordon Edes said it and its posted on rotoworld.com

thanks

Its kind of a tempting deal, Beuhrle is kind of like Beckett, highly inflated ERA from a couple bad starts, unfortunately 3 of those starts have come during this stretch where he has struggled ;), but Crisp is struggling too

Anyone realize that one of Theo's best qualities is mis-direction? Sometimes the Sox float out rumors of their own to the media, while behind the doors is something completely different
or sometimes he just gives a ridiculously large contract extension to BK Kim or he signs a bag of s*** like JT Snow.

if anything out of the turned down deal, it shows Crisp isnt being dangled for junky rentals (Beuhrle is struggling but its not like hes an aging #4)

Sure hope its something good because we suck right now

Wow. Just wow. Where do you come off saying that? the red sox are no where close to that. so, what? we are having a bad west coast trip. Doesn't mean we suck.

We don't actually suck in a KC sense (its frustration)

You just said Coco Crisp isn't worth Mark Buehrle.....so where do you come off saying that??

You want a pitcher that is at .500 on a team as good as the white sox who is hovering around a 5.00 ERA when our team can't score that much in a game? I'll stick with Crisp.

Do you even know who Mark Buehrle is??

He was 2-0 in the playoffs last season...he is an ACE. Forget what his numbers are right now its Mark Buehrle. One of the better most consistant lefty starters in the game. His career record is 94-62 with a 3.75 ERA. I would take him over Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt who got a lot of talk leading up to the trade deadline.

Anyone that turns down this deal is crazy from a Red Sox perspective...I've been salivating at the chance to get WMP consistent at-bats to shut up all of the "I can't believe we traded Bronson for this dude" guys, and bringing in an arm like Buehrle would be fantastic. Yet again, an arm for the current and an arm for the future.

I'll be honest...I don't think the White Sox give this deal the OK.

They already turned it down. Who could blame them

Why would we want one of the best pitchers in the game? Didn't you see him last month ... I mean .... pfffffft /sarcasm

You truely are a moron.

This makes a lot of sense

Jayson Stark

Buster Olney reported Saturday that the Red Sox offered their greatest name since Pumpsie Green to the White Sox this week for Mark Buehrle, and got turned down. The question is: What does that mean? While it obviously indicates the Red Sox think they can find a replacement for Crisp in center field, it isn't necessarily a sign the Red Sox view Crisp as some kind of monumental bust. If they'd tried to trade him for, say, Bruce Chen, that would have been a bad sign. But offering him for a pitcher who leads the entire sport in innings pitched over the last six years and a pitcher who trails only Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson and Mark Mulder in wins over that span? Crisp could almost take that as a compliment. What it indicates to us is just how adventurous the Red Sox could be between now and Monday if the right deal or deals erupt around them.

Glad you agree, because Crisp for Buehrle would be a steal for the Red Sox. I'm sure Kenny Williams laughed in Epstein's face.

Buehrle goes through these slumps at least once a year, and he'll be out of it soon enough. The last thing the White Sox need to do is trade starting pitching, especially good left-handed starting pitching for a centerfielder that we don't even need. Brian Anderson has been great lately, probably the hottest hitter on the team right now. Not only that, but Crisp doesn't even come close to matching up to Anderson defensively.

hmmm just wondering Thee Sox: did you see that catch(s) Coco made ?

defense worse than Anderson's please....
