.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Engel Beltre, OF, Dominicana (16)

A left-handed hitter with extra-base power. He has a powerful throwing arm and plays great defense in the outfield. There's a rumor that he has a verbal agreement with the Boston Red Sox.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW, here's the whole list ..

    1. Jesus Montero, C, Venezuela (16 years old)
He can hit with power to all fields. He has powerful arms, though he will probably end up playing first base.

    2. Engel Beltre, OF, Dominicana (16)
A left-handed hitter with extra-base power. He has a powerful throwing arm and plays great defense in the outfield. There's a rumor that he has a verbal agreement with the Boston Red Sox.

    3. Angel Villalona, 3B, Dominicana (16)
A five-tool player (hits for average, hits for power, has speed, fields well and has a good arm). Villalona is 6-foot-2 and weighs 200 pounds.

    4. Moises Tejeda, SS, Dominicana (16)
He could be the most athletic of them all. He's a stunning pitcher, a great runner and a good hitter.

    5. Larry Suarez, RHP, Venezuela (17)
A tall pitcher (6-3) with an explosive fastball. The right-hander hasn't had a big show this year. He is believed to have a preliminary agreement with the Chicago Cubs.

    6. Euclides Viloria, LHP, Venezuela (16)
Sort of like Johan Santana but with less power. Viloria has a great combination of pitches, with a curveball and a changeup, and his fastball varies between 88 and 91 mph.

    7. Esmeily Gonzalez, SS, Dominicana (16)
A great player who can hit from both sides of the plate. Because of his size, good defense and powerful arm, he's compared to Rafael Furcal.

    8. Carlos Triunfel, SS, Dominicana (16)
Somewhat similar to Miguel Tejada when he was signed. He has great power and knows how to hit. Scouts say "he bounces the ball off the bat."

    9. Balbino Fuenmayor, 3B, Venezuela (16)
An athlete. He's 6-3, has soft hands, but above all things is a great hitter. He has a very good temperament and a willingness to learn.

    10. Jason Smit, SS, Australia (16)
Smit is a very disciplined and intelligent player. He's got unlimited power but doesn't fan bad pitches and defensively makes all the ordinary plays.

    11. Francisco Pena, C, Dominicana (16)
The son of ex-catcher Tony Pena is considered a great prospect because of his bat. There are rumors that he has shortened his list of favorite teams to the Yankees, Mets and Braves.

Other prospects: Dominicana (Freddy Galvis, SS; Ramon Mota, OF; Jose Toussaint, SS; Moises Montero) and Venezuela (Font Wilmont, RHP; Ricardo Ferrer, RHP; Danny Salazar, RHP; Joel Romero, RHP; Fabian Jedron, LHP).

Anyone know what ever happened to Mike Garciaparra?

I think it was Mike, wasn't it?

He is still in the Mariners farm system....He hasn't developed to his first round draft status.

Found this on another board ..

Young Engel Beltre made the jump to professional baseball with the hopes of being the next David Ortiz, or following in the footsteps of Ken Griffey Jr.

And it is with the Boston Red Sox that he signed for $600,000, Sunday. The largest contract ever given out by Boston in the Dominican.

According to one executive of the Red Sox, Beltre is a five-tool player...

"This is a kid who has all the qualities you want in a prospect, and it is the most important signing we have made in this country." (whither Luis Soto?) said the coordinator of international scouting, John Dipuglia.

Beltre is 16 and a half years old, and is one of four brothers, each one a faithful fanatic of the Red Sox.

"David Ortiz is my favorite player and I am thankful to the Red Sox for the opportunity they have given me," said Beltre minutes after putting his signature on the lucrative contract.

Beltre is a centerfielder with an above average arm, plays good defense, and combines hitting for a high average, with power potential.

Beltre has played baseball for 7 years and one of his instructors describes him as a complete player.

"This boy has all the chance to develop into a future star. He is a hard worker and he will be able to flourish if he stays that way," said Santiago Jimenez, a manager on one of the teams in one of the smaller Dominican leagues.

Beltre will be assigned to the minor leagues. But he will begin this year in the Red Sox Dominican complex, and next year he will play in the Dominican Summer League.

I haven't found to much talk about this topic, the international signing is divided into two signing periods the early phase which runs from July second to the end of August which is normally but not exclusive to players who will turn 16 yrs by the end of August and the regular phase which runs from September to May, where players 16 yrs and older can sign.

In the 2006 early phase the Red Sox signed 10 players, seven Dominicans, two Venezuelans and one Australian.

They where;

Angel Beltre CF

Moises Tejada SS

Stormy Pimental RHP

Manuel Rivera LHP

Wilfredo Pichardo 2B

Juan Bonafacio OF

Emilio Valera RHP

Anthony Alvarado RHP

Pedro Chourio 3B

Michael Lennox 3B

Lennox is Auastralian, Chourio and Alvarado are Venezuelans, the rest are Dominicans. Lennox won't play profesionally until 2008 and should start his carreer in the 2008 GCL, Beltre and Tejeda will start their carreers in the 2007 GCL, Valera who is 20 yrs started playing professionally in the 2006 DSL and should return to it in 2007. The rest of the signees will be in the 2007 DSL.

I could just look at soxprospects.com, but who do YOU see as the top prospect of that above group? Given that most have not played pro-ball yet its a hard call, but do you get a sense of who the Sox are really excited about above others?

CF and SS are both great places to start. It's very difficult to project these guys, since it will likely take, what, like 6 years for them to get to the bigs (at least). It really tests the patience even of the most die-hard minor-league fans, given that these guys are pre-minor leagues.

That said, I hope that we're all still on this board by the time they finally make the show.

We might be on these boards, but no one on the current Red Sox will still be with the Red Sox.

Beltre and Tejada are the top signings, but Pimental, Rivera, Pichardo, Alvarado and Chourio have talent, but as a 16 yrs they have long journey.

That's a good over/under question.

I'm betting Pedroia and Papelbon will still be on the team.

My bet would be that by the time they get here papelbon will have signed with the Yankees as a FA and Pedroia will be a backup infielder for the A's.

Papelbon will likely never make it to free agency if he is the starter the red sox believe he will be.
I guess that you are looking into your crystal ball. I was just being facetious, but if he left us in FA, it wouldn't be the first time that it happened...right?

It wouldn't be but the I don't believe they would ever let papelbon come close to free agency if he turned out to be a very good starter. they will lock him up.

Even if they lock him up for 6 years, it will take those 16 year old Dominican kids longer than that to get to Fenway.

I don't think the sox are going to let Papelbon hit free agency any time soon.

I agree Papelbon is going to be here for a very very very long time. He's going to oneday be the Ace of this Sox staff in the not too distant future.
