Saw this in today’s Herald:

According to the Rocky Mountain News, the Sox have shown interest in Colorado Rockies first-base prospect Ryan Shealy. A deal for Shealy, whose path to the majors is blocked by All-Star Todd Helton, likely would require the return of a pitcher capable of stepping right into the Rockies’ rotation, a la Abe Alvarez. .

I'm guessing this would be more along the lines of building for the future, not really a fix for this year, unless Shealy could be a bat off the bench with some pop. I like the fact that Shealy does have plenty of options.

This is not the first time the Red Sox have been rumored to have interest in Ryan Shealy. He does have a decent bat but he is a righty. I'm not quite sure how that plays into effect for the Red Sox bench when you consider both Willy Mo Pena and Gabe Kapler will be righty hitters off the bench.

If you can get him for Abe Alvarez though...absolutly. The Red Sox could have him in Pawtucket as insurance and bring up Hee Seop Choi to be the lefty we are looking for. The Red Sox could also consider using him in another deal this summer.

this would be a great, great deal for the Sox. Alvarez has no future with us, so we should trade him when he still has the prospect label on him. Shealy is a great bat and many people think it's major league ready.

I wouldn't consider picking up Shealy a move for the future. The man turns 27 this season, meaning he's actually in his prime RIGHT NOW, and still playing in AAA. He wouldn't get a ton of ABs in Boston with Youkilis and Lowell both playing well, meaning he'd be a bench player.

That having been said, I'd trade Alvarez for him but not anything of real value.

I met Shealy at a Rockies game last summer and I've seen him play and this guy has the potential to be a huge home run hitter at the major league level. He has good plate discipline and incredible strength. I have no idea why Colorado would do this deal because he is their future at 1B after Helton, however I hope it happens.
