With the prospects we have there is NO REASON to settle for Smoltz. None whatsoever. Carlos Zambrano or Dontrelle Willis are more like it, not smoltz

as far as hansen throwing 9.2 innings

i saw paple throw in his 1st start against the twins last summer,he went 5maybe 6

he had ""it"'

he challenged hitters,he was confident that he could get anyone out and he was after all of them

i see hansen nibbling on the corners and getting behind in counts

you have him being a 10 year stud after 9.2 innings which i find brutally optimistic

thats what makes these boards fun, difference of opinion is healthy instead of the constant ballwashing that goes on over on the yankee and boston globe boards

i see him as a youngster who dont have faith in his stuff just yet

you have him being an elite setup guy who is untouchable today

im of the mindset that you go for it all every chance you get

as far as zambrano and willis go??

neither has done anything memorable in october that im aware of,i figure zambrano pitched against the marlins in 03 but willis didnt.

i cant find any backup on it

zambrano throws heat, willis has an awkward delivery and is coming on after a slow start

neither is as consistant as jon smoltz

i do know that smoltz is 16-4 in the playoffs and is one of the best clutch pitchers ive ever seen in my life and is still throwing 95 with 90mph sliders and a changeup he just developed

he'll go to the pen

he can start

he can do it all as far as pitchers go

nothing is guaranteed

but

here we are in july as one of the favorites to win it all and if,iiiiiiiiiiif the chance comes up to get this guy i say do it if its only a matter of losing craig hansen

I don't see this dominant slider that everyone keeps raving about. All he throws is that fastball, which goes right toward the middle, every time.

Right now, I see a pitcher who has control, but no command.

Are we talking about Hansen? His fastball deffinitly has a tail to it. Usually starts out left and comes in right. Its not drastic but it does have heat. You are right though as far as command....top notch velocity is only a good thing if you can control it and mix speeds with secondary pitches. He still looks like a pitcher who relies on shear talent to get through innings.

Liriano has some serious heat but his breaking ball is nasty and the change in speeds is fooling everyone. It can be the difference between a great pitcher and an average one.

Winning the whole thing is so difficult with two playoff series before the WS that I would be very happy to win another WS at the expense of Hansen. I'd drive him to Fulton County Stadium.

NO,NO,NO............We have a history of giving upthe future for instant gratification.we're building for a Dynasty.lets NOT trade away our farm system.  :ortiz:

Hansen is going nowhere just like Zito and Smoltz are not getting traded. There is nothing on the trade market. If people thought last years was weak at the deadline this year could be even weakier.

Thank God...we're going to be near the BIG Show for years to come.Again, lets not give away our future.:papelbon:

I'm thinking that you are a glass half full person. I'm realistic. Dynasties are extremely rare. Other than the Yankees from 96-01, what dynasties have there been in the last 30 years? You are giving up the golden ring for an elusive hpoe and a prayer.

BTW Other than Jeff Bagwell, what is the history of giving up the future for instant gratification?

i don't like the idea of Brad Lidge, he reminds me of a Matt Clement case. Ever since Pujols belted that one out in the NLCS, he just chokes on save situations, nothing physically wrong, he just isnt right mentally

He would probably be able to handle middle relief/setup role.

oh, no doubt he is better than Seanez, and Timlin is aging, but with Lidge:

1. Some clubs would probably offer him a closers role which would put more money in his future.

2. The Sox might be tempted to put him at closer next year and move Paps to the rotation

Plus, with Manny D, Hansen, Paps and hopefully JVB soon, I'm not that worried about the bullpen. It is not the talent, it is the use of it. We were fine through 17 innings, or until we had to use Seanez. WE have 1, sometimes two weak links

We could perhaps use him for trade bait.I believe Houston is fed up with him.We could probably get him on the cheap, then trade for a piece we really want.

if we pitch him in situations that are not stressful, we have a small chance at building him back up to past form, but he probly still won't be as good as Paps, but you know, it might be worth a shot, depending on what the want, anything involving Lester Hasnen or Pedroia has got to be a no

lidge is toast

he lost 2 games personally this weekend

his #s are based in the nl central where arroyo and karen carpenter are dueling for the era title

he'll do the donny moore after a week of the boston press on his ass

Chappy In a perfect world, what would you like to add to the team prior to the trading deadline?

Theo_Epstein In a perfect world, we'd add an impact starting pitcher, but I think 29 teams would have the same answer. This year's trade market looks to be similar to last year in that there is more demand than supply for quality players. We will be aggressive, but will not mortgage our future for a short-term fix.

This is from theo's boston.com chat today

Heres the problem with your plan. The teams willing to trade for Lidge are going to be playoff teams as well. Those teams are looking to add pieces not subtract them. The teams out of the race that are looking to trade us pieces we need, will not want to take on Lidge and his contract/future contract.

If we got Lidge it would be at least for the rest of the season.
