June 23, 2006 -- As a New Englander for all of his 61 years, ESPN's Peter Gammons has a good feel for Boston, so he probably is the right person to predict the reaction Pedro Martinez will receive when he returns to Fenway as a Met.

"There will be a lot of booing,'' Gammons said of Martinez' scheduled Wednesday start.

Gammons doesn't think the booing is deserved, but said that some Boston sports-talk radio hosts and Web sites have made it a point to present Martinez as greedy for leaving the Red Sox for the four-year, $53 million Met offer in 2005.

"It is really unfair, some of the hits he takes here on the radio and shots people take at him,'' Gammons said.

Gammons knows Martinez better than most. He has traveled to Martinez' home in the Dominican five times, and Gammons raves about Martinez' charitable efforts. He thinks Martinez is concerned about the reaction he will receive at Fenway.

"I get the sense, talking to him a couple of weeks ago, that he is a little worried,'' Gammons said.

When Johnny Damon returned to Fenway as a Yankee, it was widely reasoned the Fenway fans were booing the uniform, not the player. But Gammons thinks Red Sox fans don't know how to let things go.

"In Boston, they are unforgiving,'' Gammons said. "Boston dwells on anything that has to do with the Red Sox, far more than New York dwells on anything. I think that the Red Sox are so important to people in New England, it loses perspective sometimes.''

So the fact that Martinez was 117-37 with Boston and helped break an 86-year World Series curse might be forgotten because he did what most people would do - he took more money to do the same job.

Martinez was a show in Boston. Gammons said knowledgeable fans would choose to hit the concessions when the home team was hitting because they would rather miss a home run than one scintillating delivery from Martinez.

Expect the Fenway fans to stay glued on Pedro - only now, in hopes of seeing a Red Sox player take him deep.

First of all any BoSox fan that boos Petey should be banned from Fenway. Second ... who the f*** is Peter Gammons to speak for RSN? Gammons has become a cronic liar over the past few years ... most notably the "There's a 99% tear in Pedro's arm". I wish ESPN had some dignity and didn't just hire people for their names. I just wish there was a way to annonce to the sports world that that old Bob Barker looking mother f***er does not speak for RSN.

If Gammons thinks RSN is going to boo Petey then he is clearly not the fan he claims to be.

Boston fans are unforgiving? Maybe back when you were growing up Grandpa Gammons, but last I checked we not only forgave, but welcomed Wakefield back with open arms after he let up the ALCS winning HR to AFB.

Gammons please stop talking ... everytime you open you're mouth you make RSN look bad. You're a worse face for RSN than BDD.

f*** him for speaking for myself. Pedro will undoubtedly get the standing ovation he deserves

He also predicted that Damon would get a rocking standing ovation. He might be from Boston, but that doesnt mean he knows how Red Sox fans think. Right on about Wakefield. I went to the 2004 home opening game and it was pretty loud with cheers at Fenway when Wakefield's name was announced. How about Graffanino's return to Fenway last October after he made that costly error? standing ovation.

Martinez was a show in Boston. Gammons said knowledgeable fans would choose to hit the concessions when the home team was hitting because they would rather miss a home run than one scintillating delivery from Martinez.

He's not just ripping the newcomer fans but really the entire population of Red Sox fans. Have fun eating your crow Gammons, hope you choke on it

f*** the NY Post, not Gammons.....

Here is Gammons' quote in it's entirety: "No, there won't be any booing...well, almost none. I have a neighbor who isn't playing with a full six-string, if you catch my drift...I think there will be a lot of booing from him because he's off his medications these days. I certainly expect he'll be dealt with in the harshest fashion by those in the surrounding seats. He probably won't survive the game. Probably."

Even if it was the Post that took his quote out of context it's not like he hasn't made a million moronic comments in the past. I mean just look later in the article where he calls RSN unforgiving.

Also I'll believe the Post before I believe someone who posts on a message board.

And that is your right. I personally believe the person on the internet has less conflict of interest. The newspaper's objective is to sell papers, and controversy is a very good method of achieving that goal. Every single one of those quotes can be taken out of context since none of them are preceded by the actual question that was asked, and every one of them are sentences (or partial sentences) of likely longer responses. The Post is one of the more sensational news publications out there. There aren't many lines they won't cross.

Only *******s and Yankee fans will boo Pedro. IMO there percentage of ******* fans in RSN is small, and not many Yankee fans will venture to Fenway for this game.

I'm surprised, you distinguished between *******s and Yankee fans, as if there is a difference.

I sincerely doubt Pedro will get booed. There's no reason to hate on the Mets from a Sox standpoint.. well besides '86.

As to the other point, yes Peter Gammons needs to be taken out to pasture and sent the way of Old Yeller.

Booing Red Sox players and ex-Red Sox players is what Yankee fans do. I can respect that. It doesn't mean that they are *******s.

Why get pissed about that article? It's his opionion, so whatever. I don't think he is speaking for anyone, he just thinks people will boo. Big f***ing deal. Oh, and Gammons happens to be right about how Boston always dwells and is unforgiving. Good proof would be how some of you react to the article.

So you're saying Red Sox fans are generally very rational, understanding people who don't get down on a player when they are just going through a slump? Right? Very forgiving fan base.

..... How dare peter gammons say otherwise.

Gammo reminds me of the oracle from mythology. His “prophesies” are sometimes hard to follow, contradictory, and not always to be taken at face value. But every once in a while you’ll find a nugget of truth if you look hard enough.

Pedro gets neither a boo or a cheer for me, I was tired of his acting of a prima donna at the end. Thanks for the memories!
The great ones get special treatment. It has always been that way, and no one has done it better than Pedro in the last 40 years.

Yeah thank God we got Clement and Wells with the Pedro money. Great move there, who needs Pedro when you have talent like that :thumbdown. Pedro put up some of the best seasons EVER by a pitcher while in Boston. Honestly, under 2 ERA in a hitters park in the AL East, just think about that for a minute. Guy gets a standing ovation for what he did in Boston. This is his first game in Boston since the '04 WS win, show the guy some respect for what he helped accomplish.

Also about the Gammo thing, it sounds like it was taken completely out of context on purpose to sensationalize a story out of nothing. Gammo is sitll good most of the time and he's a HOF sports writer, his stuff (while in decline) is still better than 99% of the dreck that is out there these days.

Yes but see it's not just his opinion. He's making an opinion for all of us ... all of RSN. He's saying the fans in Fenway will boo Petey. He's not saying that he is going to boo Petey ... he's saying that RSN is. If he wants to say "I will be booing Pedro" I'm fine with that. But to make a blanket statement about a huge group of people ... just doesn't make sense. Has he conducted a poll somewhere? Ask a random thousand people in Boston? How exactly did he arrive at the conclusion that RSN will boo Petey? That's right he did nothing. No research.

Like most of what comes out of Peter Gammons mouth ... this came out of his ass first.

No, he isn't. How is he making an opinion for you? Peter Gammons thinks Pedro will be booed. You don't. Two seperate opinions.

Did he say everyone is going to boo? No. He said there will be "some boos", which there will be because some people are retarded. The majority will be cheers, and he didn't say anything otherwise. Besides, what the hell is the big deal even if the thinks he's going to get mostly boos? It's HIS OPINION. He's not making the opinion for RSN, he's just writing a f***ing article and saying what he thinks. If a fan of a certain team writes an article about that team it doesn't mean he shares the same opinion as every fan of that team.

Did you do research to come to the conclusion that Pedro will be cheered?

Gammons is awesome. Leave him alone.

of course you would say that. you named yourself after the dirt dogs.. probably the worst place to read anything intelligent about baseball.

p.s.- boston dirt dogs SUCK

If you know your not going to boo, then why does it matter what he wrote? Its not like people read that and then think less of Sox fans, they'd think less of Gammons if anyone if they disagree.

And who knows, maybe theres some people who read that and agreed 100%, its all personal views on it.

For some reason Steve Silva and BDD have gone out of their way to bash Pedro ever since their lame website started. I pulled this line from the website today:

Do It Like Damon: 4 Days Until the Paydro Martinez Greedy-Petey-Bolted-for-New-York Standing Boo-vation

They’ve done more to engender the notion of Sox fans booing Pedro than anyone. Gammon’s quote, taken out of context and printed in the NY Post, pales in comparison. I think most true fans know that the BDD site is mostly sensational ********, as is most anything you’ll read in a NY Post column.

What is amazing here is that Gammo get's asked what he thinks will happen -- and he gives his opinion. (same thing happened on "the big show" on weei last week) -----but then he is killed for doing so! If someone asked me i would give them my opinion---the difference here is that none of the people on this board (to the best of my knowledge) were interviewed by a major paper for their opinion! I know a lot of people here want to bag him for it, but gammo does have the credentials to give his opinion on a baseball game!B)

some MSNBC writer is calling out for Sox fans to boo Pedro

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13563958/

This is the headline: They did the same to Damon — it would be an insult to do otherwise

:what: 2 totally different situations. Youre not even a Red Sox fan, you are a writer from New York. The f*** you know whats best and what we should do. Have fun hearing about the Pedro raucous standing ovation

why boo a guy who was nothing but great for 7 years??

anyone remember his last effort?

3-0 shutout over the cards in game 3 essentially locking up the world series?

who would possibly boo this man?

Posted
This guy was the most dominant pitcher in the world when he was here, before nagging injuries in 2001. This guy put his guts out there on the line every fifth day, and, despite being a prima donna, he was arguably the best Red Sox pitcher ever. If anyone boos him, they obviously were not paying attention to the Pedro Era.
