The Red Sox didn't believe that Snyder could be their fifth starter, no one did. Snyder looked OK, but he wasn't going to be able to sustain that. The Red Sox needed to make a move, Johnson was available.

Why you think you're the only one is beyond me. A little conceited, no?

I don't know---in an interview on tuesday Shill said he knows Snyder real well (one of his good friends) from them working out together during the offseason. He was thrilled that Snyder got his chance and he seemed to think that he should be a starter. he said he has the stuff, but injuries have really hurt him. I can see Snyder coming back up depending upon what happens with the fatman and clement!

Every doolar and prospect given up for this guy was totally wasted. The franchise would get more value out of the money if they spent it on additional toilet paper and paper towels for the Fenway bathrooms. Isn't this guy 40 games under .500 with an ERA around 5. What's the point? He makes Clement look like Halladay. This is more stupid than a Duquette Band Aid move. The FO has to stop jerking around and get serious about getting another experienced pitcher. They can get by with this crap for now, but sooner or later they'll have to make a meaningful move.

Don't worry. The Sox only spend doolars ( the International currency ) for waiver wire crap. They save the real dollars for the meaningful players.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced that newly acquired starter Jason Johnson will start on July 1 at Florida against the Marlins, which is the next time the team will need a fifth starter. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said that Johnson is expected to report to the team late tomorrow.

To make room for Johnson, Kyle Snyder was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game and will start Sunday for the Pawsox against the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees Triple A affiliate.

Francona said the team will sit down with Johnson and formulate a plan to keep him sharp between now and his scheduled start. Epstein said that with the additions of Johnson and Snyder the team now has some wiggle room if another starter goes down to injury. That wasn't the case six days ago, when Epstein said the team may have been forced to rush a starter up from the minor leagues to plug the gap.

The scouting report on Johnson, who was picked up from Cleveland for cash and a player to be named later, via Francona was that the veteran righthander can sink with velocity and has a good breaking ball. Despite that, Johnson has only had a winning record once in all or part of 10 major league seasons. His best record was 8-7 with Baltimore in 1999.

Epstein elaborated on the move:

"He's a ground ball pitcher," said the Sox GM. "There have been a lot of balls that have been getting through [the Guardians] infield that we hope that our infield defense, which we think is pretty good, might help him out a little bit.

"We're buying low on Jason Johnson. This guy is a major league starting pitcher. He's had a bad couple of months and because of that the acquisition cost is extremely low because we're not giving up a playerand Cleveland is sending over a lot of money to us to help pay salary. Given the market for starting pitching and our need to improve our depth, it just makes a lot of sense."

On the injury front:

-- Keith Foulke has not progressed to the point that he can throw yet. Before that can happen, Francona said the inflammation in his right elbow needs to subside, however long that takes. Francona said hopefully it will happen by the end of the week.

-- Matt Clement threw yesterday at 60 feet and threw again today at a slightly longer distance, according to Francona. The Sox manager said Clement's shoulder strengthening program is going to take longer than Mike Timlin's simply because Clement is a starter and needs to be able to throw more pitches per outing.

-- Francona saw signs of success in Craig Hansen's outing last night. Hansen went two innings and allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out two. The Sox manager said he thought Hansen tired in the ninth when the Nationals scored both runs off him and sent seven men to the plate.

"I think he stayed in his delivery and he stayed in his arm slot better than we've seen in the past. I thought he was up a little bit. I think when he gets that down and repeats that delivery we've got the guy we're looking for."

July 1st at Florida. Should be a good time for him to make his first start.

And Theo says we are not giving up a player in the deal.

In 3 career starts against Florida, Johnson is 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA.

ya but this is an entirely different team than the Florida teams he has faced before

A groundball pitcher is perfect for this Red Sox team...

Consider David Pauley is a ground ball pitcher as was Kyle Snyder.....neither of them come close to the experience of Jason Johnson. I'm not crossing my fingers for anything incredible but it could work for a couple starts. Maybe he can survive until David Wells comes back.

I would bet $100 right now that Wells isn't coming back.

That he does come back?

He hasn't done ANY rehab work yet.

hahaha no that he doesnt come back.

I dont see there being any possibility that he comes back. I dont think he really wants to go through the effort of rehab.

haha wow that was quick. I knew people would jump all over my statement of waiting until Wells comes back. I agree its a stretch but its not completely out of the question. David Wells may just be waiting for the season to progress further so he only plays half a year and is completely effective....

I wouldn't hold my breathe though

Just what we need another sinkerballer that opponents hit .400 against.

I really think he'll improve with the infield here.

You don't need an ace for your #5, just someone who can keep you in games.

I think we're all right in terms of 1-3, and #4 just pitched an excellent game.

40 games under .500-- I think he needs more than a good infield.

Probably...but this move is so low-risk/decent potential that it's really not worth worrying about.

It's not low risk if the Yankees are making inroads for Smoltz while we are dicking around with this POS.

Let's give him a chance, but I would like to see Snyder get another chance here. He has great stuff, just full of injuries over his career. Shilling was very hopefull with Snyder---I guess we'll see what happens, but I'm not counting on the fatman and Clement coming back strong!

So who are the Yankees going to trade for Smoltz?

Prospects.

Oops. They don't have any. Probably trade all the young players currently in the MLB, cano, wang, cabrera, all for the 40 year old smoltz who will pitch one year and suck and then retire and the braves will be the best young team.

Just another Yankee Move.

a voice of reason and sanity

do we want to see rj mussina and smoltz in a playoff series?

Erm, I highly doubt that acquiring johnson has tied up Theo's phone lines so that he won't be talking to the Braves about Smoltz. If Smoltz is available, the Sox will at least look into it.

The Braves would want young players for Smoltz.

Realistically, the Yankees will not part with Cano, Hughes, Wang, or Tabata for a 38 year old pitcher when all the players on that list could win them one or more World Series titles.

Maybe Duncan, but that's about it.

I think Detroit will make a deal for Smoltz if they are still in the race.
