Schilling duels Santana in opener of three-game set

Boston (36-25) at Minnesota (28-34) 8:10 pm EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ace lefthander Johan Santana and the Minnesota Twins will stand in the way of Curt Schilling's fifth straight win Tuesday, when the Boston Red Sox visit the Metrodome for the opener of a three-game series.

Schilling (9-2, 3.81 ERA) allowed three solo homers in eight innings of a 9-3 win against the New York Yankees on Thursday, becoming the first American League pitcher to reach nine wins this season. In his last five starts, Schilling has gone 4-0 with a 3.89 ERA.

The 39-year-old Schilling also began the season with four straight wins while Santana (6-4, 3.16) struggled out of the gate with an 0-3 mark in his first four starts. The American League's Cy Young Award winner in 2004, Santana has gone 6-1 with a 2.53 ERA in his last nine starts to re-emerge as arguably the most dominant starter in the circuit.

The league leader in strikeouts the last two seasons, Santana has recorded 73 strikeouts in his last 64 innings to again lead the circuit in that category with 91 this season.

Santana's batterymate Joe Mauer has been the arguably the best hitter in baseball of late, batting .500 (20-for-40) in June to raise his overall average to a major league-best .386. Despite Mauer's efforts, the Twins have lost six of their first 10 games this month.

Mauer has not recorded a hit off Schilling, who worked three hitless innings en route to three saves against Minnesota last year. In his only previous start vs. the Twins, Schilling allowed one run and four hits in seven innings of a 9-2 win on June 22, 2004.

Well..if we can win this one, we should definitely be able to take 2 of 3. If Schilling can avoid getting hammerred by "hot-hitting" lefties Mauer and Morneau....he should be able to silence the rest of the Twinkies.

The Red Sox today placed reliever Keith Foulke on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 12) with right elbow tendonitis and called up pitcher Jermaine Van Buren from Pawtucket to take his place.

The team also officially activated reliever Mike Timlin from the DL.

Ok heres your options

Youk in right field, Snow at 1st

Willie Harris in right field

Trot starting against a lefty is the better option

is the ground in Minnesota even turf? it looks like rubber

Whatever it is, it isnt grass and it leads to throwing and fielding errors by otherwise solid defensive players. Baseball should be played on grass and nothing else.
