I have a more important question. Do we have any major league pitchers for the 3rd, 4th and 5th slots in the rotation? I am too tired to do the research, but what is the combined W-L record of our 3rd, 4th and 5th pitchers? Wakefield was 7-8, and I don't think it gets much better from there.

HOLY f***!! Are you going to hijack every thread with this? It's a valid concern/complaint, but this isn't the place for it. It would be nice if the forum for talking about our minor league players could be free of your endless rant. I don't think there is a single thread where you haven't brought this up.

Cox and Masterson are both relievers though I would like to see if they can stretch out Masterson to start. Cox has a filthy slider that was on display at the CWS. Masterson throws a heavy sinker to get hitters out. Bowden is obviously the best of the bunch as he has 4 major league pitches. His 12/6 curve is very good and his circle change is becoming a plus pitch. The scouting report has buchholz throwing 5 different pitches but I have no reports on what he has been throwing in Greenville this year. His scouting report has him at a 2 and 4 seam fastball, slider, circle change and a curveball. Bard is a 2 pitch pitcher in my mind and its good he hasn't pitched this summer. His mechanics need to be broken down once he signs and goes to instructional league because he has shown to be too reliant on his fastball. He has a slider which at times can be good but his changeup is average at best. He has an intriguing arm and can throw hard and the UNC didn't do that great of a coaching job with him because his talent is very good and he showed average results. Johnson is coming off TJS but could be a solid pitcher. Don't know that much about him but he was very good before TJS throwing in the mid 90's at Wichita State.

If one of those players actually sniff the bigs, I'll be impressed. As of right now, the sox have already called up all that is to be called up this season, unless you are looking to replace Loretta?

They will replace Loretta next season and that isn't even a question.

Fantastic post Jsinger. Great info, thank you. Who could you compare Masterson's sinker too?? Wang, Jason Johnson, Derek Lower, Brandon Webb??

probably DLowe. Both are tall. They both throw a sinker similar in mph. I would like to see the Red Sox stretch Masterson into a starter though instead of a reliever since he was a starter at San Diego State.

This signing has come out of nowhere and I am totally surprised by it.

EDMOND - Ty Weeden's baseball career at the University of Arkansas lasted barely five minutes.

Weeden, an Edmond Santa Fe graduate who was drafted in the 16th round as a catcher by the Boston Red Sox in June, was beginning his orientation in Fayetteville when he received the call he had been waiting for all summer long. The Red Sox had come up with the amount of money Weeden felt his services were worth.

Weeden declined to name a specific dollar figure on Thursday, but he said the signing bonus was in the neighborhood of $500,000.

"I didn't know what to do," Weeden said. "When they called, I just looked at my dad."

Weeden then informed Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn of his plans.

"We talked to my coach about it. I think he knew more about what was happening than we did. I don't think he was surprised at all. He completely understood," Weeden said.

Weeden will report to Boston's rookie league affiliate in Fort Meyers, Fla., on Sunday. His contract doesn't take effect until 2007, so he won't play in games. Instead, he will work out with the team.

I also hear the Sox just signed the catcher from the little league team down the street from me.

Whats the skinny on Weeden?

Though Ty can throw 90-92 mph off the mound, he won't follow in his brother's footsteps as a pitcher. Scouts still talk about the batting-practice show he put on at the Area Code Games last summer, displaying tremendous power to all fields. If scouts believed he could play catcher, he'd go in the first two rounds. But they're skeptical because he doesn't have the agility or receiving skills to match his arm strength. He's probably destined for first base, where much more offense is required, because he may lack the athleticism to handle an outfield corner. Nevertheless, his righthanded power is a valuable commodity, and he'll be a decent draft pick if he's considered signable away from Arkansas.

There are rumors that Brandon Belt is going to a community college instead of U of Texas which would be huge for the Sox. That would make him a possible DFE candidate.

Someone refresh me on DFE. The Sox still have rights to sign him after JuCo, or their rights expire at the next amateur draft and he's draft eligible?

That is exactly what it is. Regarding Belt going to a JUCO. If this is the case then he likely might have an agreement with the Red Sox just not for 2006. It's likely the Sox want to put him on the 2007 draft budget so they can go after Lars Anderson and Matt Laporta. To me Bard will eventually sign but more likely a 2007 contract as well.

Heard Laporta & Bard are heading back to school, is this true Jsinger? :o

90% sure LaPorta is going back to school. Bard I have heard has registered for fall classes but that could be a typical Scott Boras tactic. He wants to sign with the Red Sox.

He better sign with the Red Sox. Building through the farm system requires you get top talent in order to do that. If the front office can't make moves for the big league club or sign its best talent in the minors.....what use are they

The sticking point is a major league contract. Bard wants a major league contract like Hansen got. He doesn't deserve it because he is a work in progress. He has a fastball that is good and an occasional slider. He's a pitcher that will need to be broken down to be built back up again. A lot of tools but a poor development job by UNC. With that said I still want him signed and hope he signs.

Thats true and I understand that. If that was the case why did the Red Sox draft him. They have the resources so they should use them. Pay the money to keep these guys and work with them. Does a major league contract mean he must go to the majors within a certain given time??

I don't know how those parameters work per say but it might require him being on the 40 man roster at some point before he is ready. Don't get me wrong. I want Bard to sign and the Red Sox need Bard to sign. He is a red sox fan and grew a red sox fan with massachusetts roots. I still see this deal getting done somehow. He may have registered for classes but that doesn't mean he will go to them.

An MLB contract requires the player to be on the 40-man immediately, which means the option clock begins ticking immediately. Bard could be ready by the time his option clock runs out, but he's pretty raw, so I think they'd like the extra time with him, especially considering how Hansen, a more polished player coming out of college, has bombed thus far.
