Who would have thought that Mike Lowell's batting average would be higher than Jonathan Papelbon's ERA on June 9th.

Lowell: BA: 0.333

Papelbon: ERA: 0.31

Posted

Technically no most are not higher:

Paps ERA is .310

Lowell's BA is .333

Lowell's BA is higher than Paps ERA. You would have to be batting over .310 which I believe Youk is also doing.

I think the interesting part was not to see how many players are batting above Paps' ERA, but the fact that Paps' ERA is lower than a batter's average. It's even more impressive that it's lower than more than just Lowell's average.

Another intresting stat' date=' the Red Sox, typically known for not stealing have the 5th most in the AL, and 10th most in MLB, even without Coco Crisp for most of the year.[/quote']

that is interesting.

When the hell did this happen, I don't remember us stealing many bases. Other than Willie Harris for about a week.

according to MLB.com, the Sox are ranked 27th in the MLB in SB with 19.

And they are 12th in the AL

You were looking at SB%, which we are indeed 5th in the AL and 10th in the MLB.

For an interesting statistic...how about the RedSox .990 fielding percentage? They have had some pretty lousy defensive teams over the years...nice to see them at the top of the pack in league fielding...
Posted
The defense has SUCKED this week, anothe error by Youks today isn't helping it.

We still have the best fielding in the majors. It's us and then the SF Giants. That's impressive.

very much because of Alex Gonzalez

Yeah, that infield defense is incredible, most impressive I saw was hwen Pauley decided late to throw to second for the DP instead of home, and it caught Gonzalez off-guard and was way behind him but he catches it and throws in a split-second to first to get the out while off balance. This is also not to mention how great lowell ahs been, I eman he makes it looks o easy that you hardly notice, much betetr than that purple-lipped fella from NY

Stealing bases is becoming a lost art not just on the Red Sox, but all around major league baseball. A lot of teams have adopted a big bashing Red Sox / Yankees type of play. The interesting part I believe is that the Yankees are actually up there inthe league in sacrifice bunts this year. Not sure about stolen bases however.

first, its not "big bashing" teams, its "moneyball" teams that believe in not stealing bases

and, i believe the yanks have always had a decent amount of sac bunts

Posted

the reds have bashers and they steal quite a bit with freel and lopez and others

damon jetsey cano and cairo have been running for the yanks

crisp can run too

moneyball??

all i know about money ball is nobody won s*** playing it

The 2004 Boston Red Sox ring a bell?

2004 red sox ring a bell??

not really crespo

schilling pedro foulke manny lowe ortiz

the 2nd highest payroll in history dont qualify as money ball in my opinion but i admit i didnt read the book, ive only taken in bits and pieces from those who proffess its genious.

and if you recall

didnt we have a base stealer named dave roberts who saved the season by stealing a base then scoring on a single??

according to money ball philosophy(please correct me if im wrong here)

kevin millar wouldve been on 1st base and stoped at 2nd after billy muellers hit then we wouldve had bellhorn up......game over yanks sweep

when i think money ball i think oakland types

low payroll, softball type offenses, decent pitching etc...

Posted
What the hell are you talking about? Please tell me you're not serious. My post in no way refers anything to Moneyball. I'm talking about power hitting teams and how they refuse to bunt/sacrifice/steal bases, but rely on clutch hitting and homeruns.

i made a point that the reds both run and bash

why are you getting excited as if i was about to mount your mother??

If you haven't read the book, don't comment on it.

yes and i corrected you

by saying that moneyball teams dont like to bunt, steal, sac

big bashing teams will still do that stuff

the yanks do it all the time

I was refering to the psot above yours. No beef with you, pal.

Posted

and some teams mix it up with a bit of power a bit of speed and some sacrificing when need be...

you do what you gotta do when its required

the yanks bunt, hit and run, steal, hit for power and avg

the sox dont have that luxury cause they have little or no speed outside crisp

the reds run quite a bit,hit for power and are very aggressive at the plate like detroit is.

sticking to a single philosophy is dooming yourself to failure unless you have 4 20game winners and an unbeatable closer and score 8 runs a nite via the long ball...

crespo

youre saying the 2004 edition of the redsox were a money ball team i take it.

instead of telling me not to comment then why dont you justify dave roberts stealing 2nd base with 2 out in the 9th if indeed they were a money ball team....

2nd highest payroll in history and you call them a money ball team??

you should take your own advice.
